Remember when pagers were the hottest communication device? If you had one, it was because your spouse was pregnant, you were a doctor, or you were involved in nefarious activities.

Now, elementary aged students are equipped with cell phones that are far superior to my own.

But what keeps all these devices humming? It is the infrastructure lacing the planet that ensures data transmission and reliability. Most of the country is equipped with 4G data capability. However, we are rapidly approaching the need for 5G.
  • 5G systems support 1000 more devices per meter than 4G.
  • 5G eliminates the transmission inconsistencies and slowdowns caused by buildings, mountains, and crowds.
  • 5G uses a "high-spectrum band" with more access points positioned closer together.
The United States led the 4G race. However, it trails behind China and South Korea in laying out the infrastructure for 5G. China's wireless providers are streamlined by government mandate whereas the U.S. is reliant on private providers. The 5G infrastructure will use existing large cells for broad coverage and multiple smaller cells fitted to light poles roof tops for short band width connectivity.

Connectivity is a major component of the GDP.
  • 4G boosted domestic GDP by $100 billion.
  • 4G led to an 84% increase in wireless-industry employment.
  • 5G is estimated to be worth $500 billion GDP and represent millions of new jobs.
Ensuring that the U.S. stays up to date and competitive in an ever changing techno-world could mean the difference in obtaining or keeping cutting edge data-intensive industries.

The City of Escondido is currently reviewing the need for 5G infrastructure to ensure that we remain strong in the global data world.

Sincerely,

Rorie Johnston

Grand Ave to Get New Trees
In order to beautify Grand Ave, the City will be removing the eucalyptus trees in the medians and planting new, drought-tolerant trees and plants. The Downtown Business Association is investing county grant funds for this first phase project.

Tree removal will begin Monday, April 30th and will take four days to complete. The entire project will take approximately eight weeks, but will not disrupt Cruisin' Grand, the Farmers Market or the Grand Ave Festival and Street Fair.  Please be aware of traffic detours and allow extra time when visiting downtown during this beautification project.
