Award Winning LUM - Two Purdue Recognitions
CILMAR Recognizes LUM as Partner of the Year
At the end of the year banquet of the Purdue Center for Intercultural Learning-Mentorship-Assessment-Research, Lafayette Urban Ministry was presented with the Boiler Out! Community Partner of the Year award.

Carrie Anne Thomas (right) from Purdue International Programs presented the crystal award to Linda Hicks (left) representing LUM. Boiler Out! is an initiative at Purdue to engage international students in local community service activities. LUM was recognized for providing numerous engagement activities with LUM programs throughout the year including the LUM After School Program, Hunger Hike, LUM Camp, Jubilee Christmas, LUM Follies and more. LUM staff are humbled by the recognition and appreciative of the partnership with the international students at Purdue.
LUM Receives Award from ΣΛΒ & ΣΛΓ at Purdue
Lafayette Urban Ministry was also recognized by the Purdue chapters of Sigma Lambda Beta international fraternity and Sigma Lambda Gamma national sorority for "Outstanding Service to the Lafayette Community."

Joe Micon, LUM executive director, attended the reception to receive the award and is pictured above with representatives from ΣΛΒ & ΣΛΓ along with fellow recipient, Inez Stempeck of Mama Inez Mexican Bakery. LUM staff are grateful for this recognition and the partnership with the Purdue fraternity and sorority community.
LUM Emergency Shelter to Benefit from Grants
Cities Recommend Community Development Grants
Lafayette Urban Ministry has recently been recommended for two significant Community Development Block Grants from both the City of Lafayette & the City of West Lafayette.

LUM has been recommended to receive $17,590 to support the work of the LUM Emergency Shelter ($6,340 from West Lafayette and $11,250 from Lafayette). Thanks to David Heckert, LUM Emergency Shelter director, for his work on these grants.

CDBG is an important resource for local governments in their efforts to provide both transitional and permanent housing, as well as supportive services, to families and individuals experiencing homelessness. This grant money will be used to support our homeless clients.
Young Donors - Happy Hollow Elementary School
Happy Hollow Students - Toy & Book Drive for LUM
Two 4th grade students from Happy Hollow Elementary School (West Lafayette) delivered lots of toys, Legos & books to Lafayette Urban Ministry. Clark Benhart (age 10) & Cade Kitchel (age 10) coordinated a school-wide Toy & Book Drive for LUM. The project was a result of an initiative during "Genius Hour," in which Mrs. Fernandez challenged the students to create something to improve the community or themselves. The toys, Legos and books are now being put to good use in the LUM After School Program — and some will be used at LUM Camp this summer. LUM is grateful to the students at Happy Hollow for their generous donation and to Clark, Cade & Mrs. Fernandez for their leadership with this project.

  • Noon - Memorial Ride starts at American Legion Post 11
  • 2 p.m. - Memorial Service on Memorial Island, Columbian Park, Lafayette
  • 6 p.m. - Reception at American Legion Post 11 - Social Hour
  • 7 p.m. - Reception at American Legion Post 11 - Program

Requirements :
  • Experience working in a school setting or with children
  • Ability to drive a 14 passenger bus required; must be willing to obtain a New Hire license
  • Must pass state background check

Type : Part-time, Stipend
Hours : NOW through May 25, 2018; Monday – Friday, 2:15 – 3:15 p.m.
Stipend : $1,300 for the School Year, prorated
Dates : NOW through May 25, 2018, when Lafayette School Corporation is in session
Route : Central Presbyterian Church to Schools, and back to Central Presbyterian Church
Requirements :
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record
  • Experience working in a school setting or with children
  • Ability to drive a 14 passenger bus required; must be willing to obtain a New Hire license
  • Must pass state background check

  • Monday – Friday
  • 8-hour shifts (6 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. & 8:15 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.)
Pay : $15.00 per hour
Dates : May 29, 2018 – August 3, 2018
Requirements :
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education
  • Must pass a background check, medical (TB) & drug screen
  • Must complete all State required training
Duties :
  • Assisting in supervision and assuring safety of approximately 40 children (pre-K thru 6th grade)
  • Preparing children for entering into Kindergarten
  • Assisting children in improving their skills in Math, Reading and Science
  • Creating and teaching curriculum
  • Assisting in scheduling and supervising field trips
  • Interacting with parents and community members
