"This Just In..."
"It was the best of times. It was the worst of times."
How will the future remember us? How we rose to the challenge of the Coronavirus pandemic? It will certainly test our faith; our trust in one another. And, our shared sense of honor and duty to the greater good.
We hope that, by the time this reaches you, we've begun to flatten the curve. That we all self-isolated so that the dedicated nurses, doctors and paramedics - everyone - on the front lines - can better survive this terrible event, too.
This extraordinary moment reminds us of our common humanity. It provides us with the chance to reduce the anxieties and fears of our neighbors, parents and children.
Our little newsletter has always been about providing you with a few minutes of distraction. To bring about a smile or a moment of curiosity. We hope this issue does that and reminds you that at some point, hopefully very soon, life will return to those days when our biggest concern was where to go on vacation.

A Dutch Aquamanile (ca. 1400) - a vessel for pouring out water to wash your hands. (Apropos for today?)
This depicts Aristotle and Phyllis. The fable went that Phyllis had seduced and distracted Alexander the Great, Aristotle's pupil.
In order to teach his student a lesson, Aristotle allowed Phyllis to seduce and publicly humiliate him so that Alexander could see the dangers of allowing himself to be controlled by a woman.
Not that that happens today.

The Japanese artform
Kirie
is, like origami, an economic art form that requires a great deal of studious practice and patience. It's the rare, yet incredible, method of creating intricate portraits cut from only
one single sheet of paper
. The artist, Nahoko Kojima is featured.
Here is a fantastic example of a three-dimensional Kirie Sculpture that reflects the idea of becoming a true craftsperson. Here's another link which will expound on this idea:

Time...to Read
You may have a bit of time on your hands. So...here are a few books to consider having those overworked Amazon people deliver:
1889 - The legendary Nellie Bly races around the world - against - another amazing woman, Elizabeth Bisland trying to "beat" Phineas Fogg's astounding adventure.
How did LA become the LA that it is today? Forget LA Confidential. This is told through three amazing, intersecting stories.
A huge fortune. An astonishing NYC mansion. A woman with issues. Lots of "OMGs" throughout this slice of the roaring '20s!
Take a sunny vacation in these two lovely books about life in the South of France. Isn't that just what you need right now?

DNA FROM STONE AGE CHEWING GUM TELLS AN INCREDIBLE STORY
For the first time, scientists used 5,700-year-old saliva from a piece of chewed pitch to sequence the complete human genome of an ancient hunter gatherer.
Plus the world of microbes that lived inside her. What they found was enough to make a guess about what she looked like, too.

Dirty Ducts? Leaky Ducts?
Let Daniels UnDo It!
Let's talk filth.
Let's talk efficiency.
Let's act - clean and seal your leaking ducts.
Have you any idea the kind of dirt, dust, pet hair, mold, mildew, dandruff or old Cheetos may be clogging up your ducts?
Did you realize how much heat - or cool air - you may be losing into your attic with leaky ducts?
How about 10-25%*of the heating and cooling your system is cranking out! Amazing and true. Seal those ducts!
If you haven't cleaned your ducts in 3-5 years - or more - let Daniels do a complete cleaning and sealing program this spring.
According to the EPA, levels of air pollution inside homes can be two to five times higher than outdoor levels.
The cleaning process:
* We remove all your register covers, clean them thoroughly.
* With a hose and rotating brush head we scrub the ducts clean.
* Then we fog them with an EPA-registered antimicrobial mist that leaves a pleasant scent behind.**
It's a full-day job that will increase the efficiency of your system, reduce pollutants that you are breathing daily and increase the comfort of your home - immeasurably.
Call us today and schedule a complete cleaning and duct sealing - you'll breath easier (and healthier) all year long.

Your Annual Blimp/Dirigible Story
The only instance during World War I of an airship capturing a merchant vessel occurred on April 23, 1917, when the German zeppelin
L23
descended on the civilian Norwegian schooner
Royal
off the Danish coast. At the airship's approach the crew abandoned the
Royal
in boats, and the zeppelin made a water landing to capture them.
The ship turned out to be carrying contraband. Kapitänleutnant Ludwig Bockholt saw the Royal conducted into the Elbe escorted by two German destroyers, surely maintaining social distancing.
"The capture of the
Royal
- actually a schooner of only 688 tons - hardly affected the trade war against England," writes historian Douglas H. Robinson, "but Bockholt's flamboyant gesture appealed particularly to the men, and tales of the exploit were told from Tondern to Hage."
(Douglas H. Robinson,
The Zeppelin in Combat
, 1962.)

My Scottish maid could do better!
In the 1870s, the Harvard College Observatory director was frustrated with his staff, and would often say "My Scottish maid could do better!" When he hired her officially in 1879, Williamina Fleming proved he had been right all along.
She spent two years doing astronomical clerical work, then in 1881 Pickering invited Fleming to formally join the Harvard Collage Observatory and taught her how to analyze stellar spectra. She became one of the founding members of the Harvard Computers, an all-women group of
human computers hired by Pickering to compute mathematical classifications and edit the observatory's publications.
Williamina ran an astronomy team for decades, publishing a classification system of tens of thousands of stars, discovering a total of 59 gaseous nebulae, over 310 variable stars, and 10 novae.
One of her most famous discoveries (among astronomers, anyways) was the Horsehead Nebula in 1888.

April Art
Moravia Fields by Marcin Sacha,
Sacha is a Krakow-born photographer and artist. Here's a bit about him and his process:
Photography became my passion in 2005. I began with nature photography and later, landscapes. I recently became also interested in pictures on the boundary of photography and graphics.
In my photo montage I often use paper, clay, bricks and ceramic forms prepared by myself. I create from them the scenery and by playing with the light I try to get interesting abstracts, which imbue a specific mood of composition of light and shadow in the plane of the frame.
My worlds even if habited by people are dominated by shapes, shadows and lights. These worlds are alien to them.
