SOS #50    J. Morris Hicks    (4-1-20)
What is Nature Trying to Tell Us?
What she is trying to tell us is no April Fool's Joke. She is deadly serious about trying to tell us...

That she is an invincible combination of chemistry, physics and biology - and that she will ALWAYS be in charge of this planet. (credit to Tom Friedman's piece below)

My biggest fear is that we human passengers on this vessel we call planet Earth -- will not learn enough from this Coronavirus pandemic to make us want to focus on "getting right with nature."

What does getting right mean? To me, it means urgently and totally re-inventing our entire system of living on this planet - such that we will someday be living in complete harmony with nature.

Someone recently asked me: How close are we now to achieving that harmonious status with Mother Nature?

On a scale of zero to a hundred - my guess is that we are somewhere around five percent. And we continue to get worse. Meanwhile, what will happen after Covid-19? Will we truly get serious about adhering to the rules of nature? It would be great if we did, but I don't think we will.

I fear that whichever political party is in the White House when an effective vaccine is developed - will declare a victory for their tribe and then do everything within their power to bring our economy back to its glory days of the "before Coronavirus" era. That's the era when all of us Homo sapiens in the developed world were riding roughshod over nature with nary a care in the world about the consequences.
Too Many Humans Coupled with a Grossly Unsustainable Way of Living

Tom Friedman quotes one of his favorite environmental teachers (Rob Watson)  yesterday in his piece  as he talks about Mother Nature:

You cannot sweet-talk her. You cannot spin her. You cannot manipulate her. And you certainly cannot tell her, "Mother Nature, stop ruining my beautiful stock market."

No, no, no. Mother Nature will always and only do whatever chemistry, biology and physics dictate, and "Mother Nature always bats last," says Watson, "and she always bats 1.000." Do not mess with Mother Nature.

What can you do now to help? How can you make a difference when it comes to replacing our current civilization with one that co-exists in harmony with nature?

Luckily for you, my 46-year-old son, Jason, recently told me that our book, OUTCRY, was missing one chapter. Now, after the addition of that chapter, he says that our book is complete.

Chapter 13 How Can You Make a Difference?

"Modern society will find no solution to the ecological
problem -  unless it takes a serious look at its lifestyle."

-Pope John Paul II

The first two paragraphs of Chapter 13

Let's start with three questions: What can you do? What should you do? What will you do? After reading the first twelve chapters of this book, you know the answer to the first two questions. But only you can answer the third one: What  will  you do?

We have all become accustomed to the phrase, "If everyone does a little, then we will all accomplish a lot." True, but a lot of small changes will not be enough to transform the overall, grossly unsustainable system of the way we live on this planet. The primary question we must ask is: How do we effect change, or transformation, of that overall system?

Okay, you got this far, so here
is a link  to  the entire chapter (a five-minute read)

E-books are far greener. For environmental reasons, our book is only available in an e-book format. As such, no trees have to die and the books do not need to be manufactured and shipped to customers. As a bonus, the books are less expensive, while providing readers immediate access to hundreds of references via hyperlinks that appear herein.

The books are also searchable and you can copy and paste excerpts - greatly enhancing the reading experience. For us, this decision was a no brainer, as we would feel like hypocrites if we had chosen to distribute this book in any other format.

Finally, if you have three electronic devices, you essentially get three copies for the price of one.

PS: You may be wondering how you can help promote the never-ending search for a way to save our species. You can get me in front of some audiences that you think might be ready to hear about the long-overdue, global "conversation" about our survival.

During this time of social distancing, I would be happy to speak to your group via a highly sustainable, virtual mode. While it was snowing here in Vermont on Monday, I was a guest speaker via Zoom with Dr. Sailesh Rao, in sunny Arizona -- during his Climate Healers Summit that runs through April 18. I love this quote on his website:

"You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete."

---Buckminster Fuller
You can join my mailing list and/or find all of my previous postings by visiting the SOS Memos page on my website Here are a few of them:

As always, I am just trying to spark a global conversation about what is needed. By sharing a vision of what I believe is possible, I hope to influence others to think bigger, better and bolder.

********************

As for speaking, I continue to search for mainstream audiences who may have an interest in learning more about a realistically hopeful vision for our future - and their role in making that vision come true.

As such, I will travel anywhere for an opportunity to speak to one or more groups in each city that I visit. I will create a custom presentation for each audience and I only ask for travel expense reimbursement and a modest honorarium.

In the months ahead, I will continue to focus on the urgent need for a totally reinvented greening of our civilization - beginning with a model in the USA that could be applied globally over the next fifty years.

Upcoming talks : There are lots of open dates on my calendar as my next scheduled talk is  at Camp Plant-Stock in Black Mountain, NC, in August.

As for the specifics of my topic, I invite you to  contact me directly  about how I might tailor my presentation to best suit an audience you may have in mind:

Universities,  churches,  think-tanks, legislative bodies, environmental  organizations, alumni associations, leadership clubs, PTA's  and/or civic groups who may appreciate a message of reality and hope for our future.

Please let me hear from you directly regarding any ideas or questions you may have.

What else can you do to help? Three things:

1. Live as greenly as possible while doing all that you can to raise the awareness of "big picture" solutions that are crucially necessary for saving our civilization.

2. Share this BSB and my  "Mama Ain't Happy" BSB with prominent journalists, thought leaders and/or elected officials whom you respect. They need to learn a lot more about the many reasons why  Mama ain't happy.

3. Here are a few more GRATOLA-related blogs that you can share with your most powerful friends, leaders, journalists and movie producers.

Until next time, just remember...

Humanity is on a collision course with Nature.
A damaged Nature will survive. We may not.
We must change course to avert an ecological disaster.
