Meet Derek-
Central & South AL Universal Robots Account Manager

What is your job title and what does the position entail?

I am technically a territory manager, but my primary responsibility is the introduction of Universal Robots to existing and new customers in Alabama.

How long have you been at ACS?

My first day was September 24, 2018, so I am just at six months.

What do you like best about working at ACS so far?

The depth of support available to both my customers and myself as a technical salesperson. Being able to call on one of over a dozen engineers or automation specialists while working in the field with a customer is a huge advantage for both of us.

Can you tell us a little about your background and how it helps you in this position?

I have been selling automation products for the past twelve years and as a fire protection, medical gas and plumbing engineer for five years before that. These positions have taught me how to be a much more effective communicator. Specifically how to listen and ask the right questions to make sure I understand my customers’ needs.

What are some key lessons you have taken from your career thus far?

The thing that has surprised me the most about my career is how much teaching I do on a daily basis…and how much I enjoy that part of it. Some of the products we deal with can be complicated. Being able to work through the details in a way that gives the customer an “Aha” moment is very rewarding to me.

Describe some of your hobbies – what do you like to do outside of ACS?

I like to collect, refurbish and use antique hand tools. I also love coaching youth athletics. I have been coaching soccer, baseball and softball for all three of my children for eleven years now.

What is one thing your customers might find surprising about you?

I play bass and sing (poorly) in a band called The Bumper Humpin’ Peacocks (or BHPs if there are kids in the audience). There IS a story behind the name, and it does involve a peacock and the bumper of a GMC pickup truck.

Do you have any trips planned soon?

Spring break trip to Tampa Bay, Florida…we’ll be swimming with the manatees, paddle boarding through the mangroves and waiting in line for hours on end at Busch Gardens.

What’s your favorite place in or near Birmingham?

My whole family loves hiking, so any time we can get out to Bankhead National Forrest, it’s a treat!
