It's been a week since macOS Catalina was released and the reports are coming in that it is still a bit too buggy for serious work. The advice I'm reading is that Apple is working hard to get this fixed, but we should probably plan to wait until the .2 update, rather than .1, for sufficient stability. For now, waiting seems wise.

At the top of the news this week, Timecode Systems announced that it was acquired by Atomos. "Together, the companies are building tightly integrated multicamera workflow solutions that unify all recording devices on set, allowing these devices to work together more cohesively. This allows production teams to experience, for the first time, the full impact of truly collaborative video and audio content creation across all types of program making.... The AtomX Sync module for the Ninja V and the Neon series of monitors will be the first Atomos products to feature integrated Timecode Systems technology." (Timecode Systems release)

Martin Coles, the VP of Marketing for IPV, recently released an excellent free overview of the differences between a DAM, MAM and VAM. Written by Alex Ferris, this short PDF highlights the differences in these three systems - all of which are designed to help us organize, find and access our media.

And, Martin tells me, "If you are interested in learning more, we've put together " The Essential Video Asset Management Handbook." The handbook takes our blog to the next level and layers on hints, tips, hacks, best practices and a whole bunch of insight that we've learned over the last 20 years or so."

Turning to my news, I'm delighted to report the successful launch of " The Inside Tips." We've already published eight newsletters and more than 30 tips. Sign-ups are going so well, that we are launching our fourth newsletter: " Codecs & Media" on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Sign up now to receive the inaugural issue. Every Tip Letter is free, categorized by subject - so you can pick just the tips you want to learn - and available here: TheInsideTips.com. I invite you to join us!

I have five new articles for you this week. My lead story is about the latest update to Apple's Pro Video codecs. These are not available in the Mac App Store. Here's where to find them. (And, even if you don't use FCP X, these are worth getting.) Next, I spent a couple of days testing both i5 and i7 CPUs to see which is faster for video compression. The results surprised me!

Kyno is a favorite utility of mine - because it does so much for both Premiere and FCP X. Last week, Lesspain Software updated it to version 1.7 and included several key features. My article covers the news. Then two articles one on how to organize and spot audio effects, and the other is a look at a feature in Software Update that may prevent you from getting the updates you expect. You'll find all of these in the Articles section below.

Whew! It's been a busy week. I am having great fun writing tips - in addition to this newsletter. And the comments folks are sharing are always fun to read. So, until next Monday, edit well.
