Federal Budget: Gas Tax Fund Doubled for a Year         

Finance Minister Bill Morneau tabled the 2019 budget in the House of Commons yesterday. Local governments in British Columbia will see an immediate benefit from a top up transfer of $2.2 billion to the Federal Gas Tax Fund for the coming year. Rules for Reporting Minor Crashes Amended       
 
The provincial government has amended its rules around mandatory police reporting of minor collisions. This move responds to a resolution (B83) endorsed by the UBCM membership at the 2017 convention. The updated Motor Vehicle Act Regulations increase the mandatory reporting threshold for property-damage-only (PDO) collisions from $1,000 to $10,000. Read more 
New Funding to Support Reconciliation        

The Urban Communities Partnering for Reconciliation pilot program is now accepting applications from local governments and eligible Indigenous societies.  The application deadline is May 24, 2019. Read more 
Wood Frame Building Code Changes           

The Province has announced the early adoption of building code changes to enable the construction of 12 storey wood buildings, up from the current allowance of 6 storeys. Read more 
Mayors Caucus Starts March 31st             

The spring Mayors Caucus will focus on three major policy areas that impact all BC communities: Emergency Management; Balancing Social Policy and Economic Development; and Clean BC, Implications and Opportunities for Communities. UBCM is calling for expressions of interest from local government representatives who wish to sit on Multi-Materials BC's (MMBC) Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee serves as a forum for stakeholders impacted by the packaging and printed paper stewardship program to be kept informed of program developments and to provide feedback on core program elements. Energy Step Code Council               
 
UBCM is calling for expressions of interest from local government representatives who wish to sit on the BC Energy Step Code Council. The Council is a multi-stakeholder advisory body supporting the implementation of the BC Energy Step Code and the market transition to net-zero energy ready buildings. Read more 
Urban Deer Committee                
 
UBCM is calling for expressions of interest from local government representatives who wish to sit on the Provincial Urban Deer Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee is a multi-stakeholder committee tasked with providing support to local governments that are managing and addressing urban deer issues within BC. Read more
