Lions Roar as Computer Science Soars at Zion

We simply have some amazingly dedicated teachers around here.  When I sent out the Year To Date Update with you at conferences, I only included those items which were going to happen, without question.  I now get to "update the update".

Two of our teachers, Liz Lyles and Amanda Stewart, have stepped up their games in computer science instruction.  Liz is using a very, very simple "robot" mouse to help her students better understand how they need to be specific and to use logic to get a robot to do something they want it to do.  I've seen this robot used in many classrooms from PK-G12 for initial understanding of sequencing, logic, and basics of "coding". Mrs. Lyles is also working with her students to better gauge the use of the programming language, Scratch, developed and "distributed" by MIT (yeah, that one...in Cambridge, MA..)  We seek to develop an appropriate scope and sequence of what aspects of computer science we believe are appropriate for introduction for our students at their ages and stages of development.*  We are using many resources to do this, but you will see much progress forward going into next year and subsequent years. We offer this to all students through the regular course of study, so we need it not only to accomplish learning for "technology", but also for one or more additional content areas (e.g. science, social studies, literacy, math, etc.)

Okay...on to the Middle School...  Miss Stewart, working with her colleagues, has connected with the folks at Google to pilot projects from their computer science modules.  These projects relate to current content, are step-by-step, and immerse our students in tools that are specific to G Suite (like Microsoft Office, Office 365, or Apple's iWork suite) and also which are highly transferable to those items mentioned in parentheses).  One group explore Music & Sound, while the other two explore Game Design and Sports using tools to turn their laptops into "synthesizers", design an app to track activity, and develop a game such as a race or a challenge game. Two of the projects are pretty challenging, but we will see how they work for our 7th & 8th Graders.  They won't lose out on learning, for sure!

Prayers are appreciated.

I'm impressed by my colleagues here at Zion. They have stepped up to the plate in so many areas to try new ways to reach our students.  They are learning even while they plan daily, weekly, and unit plans for this current year. Typically, such changes take two or more years to even get teachers to start working on, let alone move forward in agreement, knowing that doing so will increase their summer planning time.  Add to the mix that two of our teachers are new this year and they have a new principal who is still getting to know the school people/calendar/flow/personality, and you've got an amazing amount of extra service! When you see them, please thank them, okay?  Thanks a bunch!

His,
Krista Nagy

Kindergarten - 2nd grade
Learn about Louis Braille

Kara's mom came to speak to K-2 about Louis Braille, blindness, and Braille. She taught the students how to use the Braille typewriter, read the alphabet and a book with Braille, understand different types of blindness, and how people who are blind might use white canes for walking and using stairs. She made a special present for the students by writing their names in Braille and giving the, candy dots to practicing making their own Braille letters.
