Celebrating Diversity - A Response to the Events in Christchurch, New Zealand
|
|
It is very difficult to adequately put into words an appropriate response to the recent events in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Physical Education New Zealand (PENZ), have recently sent their members and stakeholders, a beautifully crafted message of support to the community of Christchurch; highlighting the importance of tolerance, diversity and social inclusion. In particular, they have reached out to their community about the important role they have to play in being part of the healing response, particularly for children, teenagers and young adults.
There is no doubt that we all struggle with this senseless act of terror built on a platform of hate. But Australians throughout the country, have clearly articulated their support for the residents of Christchurch and the wider New Zealand community. I think what we are saying is that 'good will always triumph over evil', and that as individuals and as a community, we can all come together to demonstrate how the acceptance and the embracing of diversity will build 'a more peaceful society and a better future' (words used by PENZ).
This week, the National President of ACHPER, Associate Professor Shane Pill, sent a message of support to our colleagues and friends at PENZ, echoing the messages made in their statement. His message is shown below:

To our colleagues and friends at Physical Education New Zealand (PENZ); ACHPER sends its sincere condolences to you for the tragic loss of life in Christchurch.
We know that around Australia, there has been an outpouring of support for the people of Christchurch. ACHPER and its members will ensure that in schools and universities throughout the country, teachers will continue to demonstrate the importance of diversity, inclusiveness and social responsibility. The simple words 'love not hate' are very relevant.
Although our words can do little, we hope our thoughts and prayers will support your country at this difficult time. We also know, that as the healing process begins, PENZ will play its part in "building a more peaceful society and a better future".

The message sent by PENZ has been shared on the ACHPER Facebook page @ACHPERInc; I encourage you to read it. I finish this article, with an extract from the PENZ statement; certainly words that apply equally to the profession in Australia:
"Perhaps this week, consider how you might formally and purposefully teach generosity, acceptance of diversity, social responsibility, inclusiveness, non-discrimination and respect for others through movement".

 In Volume 10 Issue 1, 2019 of the Curriculum Studies in Health and Physical Education Journal, Hyland and colleagues report on a study into the student perceptions of Ability and Worth in physical education.
Using qualitative methods they explore the factors that influence the level of satisfaction and engagement that students have with physical education. Rather than see perceived Ability and Worth as attributes that individuals simply possess, they challenge teachers to consider the ways their practices might increase knowledge, skills and understanding during HPE classes to positively influence student perceptions of Ability and Worth.

Open for Consultation: Draft National Action Plan for the Health of Children and Young People: 2020-2030
|
|
On 15 August 2018, the Minister for Health, the Hon Greg Hunt MP, announced the commencement of a process to establish a National Action Plan for the Health of Children and Young People: 2020-2030. Building on the vision and objectives of the Council of Australian Governments' Healthy, Safe and Thriving: National Strategic Framework for Child and Youth Health - the Action Plan provides a roadmap for a national approach to improve and ensure the health and wellbeing of all Australian children and young people - providing them with the best start to life.
The draft Action Plan is now available online for public consultation and can be accessed at the following link:
The consultation will close on Thursday 28 March 2019.
