Annual Knitting Sale
This annual favorite features work created by the Saturday Knitters throughout the month of December. All proceeds benefit the Library.

Masks for Sale at the Library
We have masks for sale! Two different styles of masks in a range of fabrics - Whimsical, Geometric, Colorful. All made with quality and care by Elaine.  $20 for one; $35 for two. All proceeds go to the Library. Be stylish, stay safe & support the library simultaneously. It's a trifecta!

Kids Bees Wax Candle Craft
Candles are important during the holiday season. They represent both religious and nonspiritual winter events. Candles bring light to our families during the darkest days of winter.

This bees wax project can be used to light your holiday tradition during these winter months. Craft kits will be available to pick up the week of December 7th to go along with a recorded "How To" instructions and stories.

Kids Birdseed Wreath Craft
This holiday season is the season of giving. The Stone Ridge Library wants to help your children make a gift for our feathered friends this December.

A craft kit will be available to pick-up from the library to make a couple of small birdseed wreaths to hang outside. No cooking required.  Kits will be available the week of December 21.

Green Cottage

Thank you to the Green Cottage for donating a fresh bouquet of flowers to the Library every week. They are enjoyed by everyone.

Behind the Scenes at the Library
Anyone who has seen the Library's recent updates-the new positioning of the Circulation Desk and relocation of the collections-has commented on how appealing the new arrangement is. The rugs, the floors (those wide boards!), and the configuration of the collection-all defined in a handout map or found by patient orienteering with help from staff: "Up the ramp for fiction...CD's in here now..." But the singular thing that ties it all together is the paint! Brown stained shelving has been transformed to celery and white. The Wow Factor!  The icing on the cake!

The magic of the color makeover is the handiwork of Gina Geede DeLong, the Library's longtime painter. Quietly, behind the scenes, brush and coffee can in hand, Gina applies the final coat to the project, tying together the labor of love performed by so many people who have created this novel experience for everyone who enters the doors of our beautiful library.

"Gina is an important part of the library team," said Director Jody Ford. "We depend on her skills and professionalism." Gina Geede DeLong is a Landscape Designer, Actor, Painter of houses and art, and is the Owner/Designer at Chipmunk Landscape Design. She Studied Visual Art and Design at SUNY New Paltz.
 
FALL BOOK DISCUSSION SERIES (Zoom) -- FOCUS ON WOMEN
Fran Sutherland, Facilitator
Artist and retired high school teacher Fran Sutherland will lead us in a three-part book discussion featuring stories about women in various times and locations, creating a rich and relevant theme for our times.
 
Thursday, December 17, 11 am
Pachinko  by  Min Jin Lee
A young Korean girl marries a minister who brings her to 1900s Japan. The enduring questions of faith, family and female fortitude are explored by later generations living as immigrants.
 
Questions we will think about include, among others: 
  • Why do you think the author wrote this story? 
  • How does it relate to women today? 
  • What does the story tell about the value of women in the time that it was written? 
  • How does the format or writing style reinforce the theme or intention of the author?

The meetings will take place on Zoom; Registration (required) is available our calendar. Fran will serve as Facilitator on the Zoom sessions with Diane DeChillo, as host on behalf of the Library. Participants may sign up for one, or all-individually, on the library website calendar. Please call Diane at 687-7023 in the Program Office if you need assistance with signing up. Group size will be limited to 12, so please reserve early. Books and audiobooks can be requested through the Mid Hudson Library System via the library's website.

The first book in the Art of Hearing Heartbeats series, this is a passionate love story, a haunting fable, and an enchanting mystery set in Burma. The December book is The Earth is Weeping: Epic Story of Indian Wars for the American West by Peter Cozzens. With the end of the Civil War, the nation recommenced its expansion onto traditional Indian tribal lands, setting off a wide-ranging conflict that would last more than three decades. In an exploration of the wars and negotiations that destroyed tribal ways of life even as they made possible the emergence of the modern United States, Peter Cozzens gives us both sides in comprehensive and singularly intimate detail. He illuminates the encroachment experienced by the tribes and the tribal conflicts over whether to fight or make peace, and explores the squalid lives of soldiers posted to the frontier and the ethical quandaries faced by generals who often sympathized with their native enemies.
