Take Another Look at CEP!
Recent changes in California state policy may improve your school's eligibility for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), a federal option that allows high-poverty schools to offer breakfast and lunch at no cost to all students and eliminates the need to collect traditional school meal applications.
Join CFPA and our partners for a webinar on Thursday, May 3rd to learn more about why now is a good time to bring universally free meals to your school.
Tia Shimada's
Letter to the Editor published in the April 19th edition of The Sacramento Bee makes the case that all public schools, including charter schools, should provide meals to low-income students.
"
Low-income charter school students are California's only low-income public school students without ensured access to free or low-cost school meals. Assembly Bill 1871 aims to change that...Whoever moves ahead in the race for political power, let's stop leaving poor kids behind. California should not be a place where it's OK for any child to go hungry in a publicly funded school." - Tia Shimada, Director of Programs, CFPA
Action Needed! Contact Your Representative, Tell Them to Oppose House Farm Bill Cuts to SNAP
Reach out to your Representative and tell them to reject the House Farm Bill proposal when it moves to the floor for a full vote. Phone calls, emails, posts to social media, and arranging member meetings for the first week of May when the Members will be back at home in district are all effective ways to make your voice heard in support of protecting SNAP/CalFresh from cuts.
To find your Representative and their contact information, call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 or use thislink.
Tell them to: "Reject Chairman Conaway's proposal that would cut vital food assistance for millions of low-income working families, seniors, and people with disabilities. The Farm Bill should be bipartisan and protect SNAP/CalFresh for the people who need it to help put food on the table."
Thank you for making your voice heard in support of SNAP
The House Farm Bill proposal threatens California children's access to food by ending "Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility." Learn more about categorical eligibility and how Californians would be impacted if the proposed changes were enacted. link
