Curtner ready to soar to new heights with new Eagle mascot
Milpitas Unified School District’s Curtner Elementary School has a new mascot, after the Board of Education unanimously approved the switch from the Stallions to the Eagles at the October 22 meeting.

Curtner Principal Maria Hartman-Hernandez wanted to pay homage to the two bald eagles who became a valued part of the school community upon arriving in April 2017. Since then, the pair returns annually to the Redwood trees located on the southern face of Curtner’s campus.

“It is my belief that the Curtner Bald Eagle superiorly represents the 2019 Curtner values that Curtner strives to grow in our students,” wrote Hartman-Hernandez in her proposal to the Board. “When researching the bald eagle, some of the terms and phrases most commonly associated with the eagle are courage, vision, hope, nobility, ferocity, and freedom.”

Curtner received overwhelming support from its student body and entire school community, with 79 percent of 891 votes preferring the Bald Eagle or Eagle as the new mascot.
  
RECOGNITIONS
Milpitas High School earns high praise from community in Post's 2019 Best of the Best
Milpitas High School was showered with accolades from the 2019 Milpitas Post Best of the Best Readers’ Choice Awards announced last month by The Milpitas Post in the newspaper’s 29th annual special edition.

Milpitas Post readers nominated their Milpitas’ favorites in over 100 categories.

When the votes were tabulated, Milpitas High School, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this school term, was selected as the “Best Public School.”

Principal Francis Rojas, who is in his third year at the helm at MHS, was recognized as the city’s “Best Principal,” while MHS mathematics teacher Nick Pham was honored as “Best Teacher” by Milpitas Post readers.

They were all recognized by the Board of Education and Executive cabinet at the October 22 meeting.

MUSD schools, site leaders recognized as being among best in the city
Burnett Elementary School Principal Hanna Asrat and the school community (top photo) were honored by the Board of Education and the Executive cabinet at the Oct. 22 meeting after being named as 2019 Milpitas Post Best of the Best Readers' Choice Honor Award Winners.

Asrat and Spangler Elementary School Principal Luis Lopez (above) were recognized as honorees in the 2019 Milpitas Post Best of Best Readers' Choice Awards in the "Best Principal" category.

Meanwhile, Burnett and Curtner Elementary Schools were 2019 Honor Award Winners in the "Best School" category.

HIGHLIGHTS
Board approves three new members to the Community Board Advisory Council
Milpitas residents Tinga Xu, Anuradha Sankara, and Lupe Ruvalcaba will join MUSD's Community Board Advisory Council, after the Board approved their nominations from the CBAC selection subcommittee.

The trio will serve a two-year term as at-large members from October 2019 through October 2021.

The purpose of the CBAC is to solicit community and staff opinions and ideas about district goals, initiatives, programs, and school calendar adoption cycles.

In addition to the three Board appointed representatives, each school site council nominates one representative to attend the CBAC meetings.  District administrator, certificated, and classified team members are also represented at CBAC. Student council representatives also attend the CBAC meetings.  A board liaison attends the meetings, but is not a voting member of the CBAC.
 
The school district received a total of 7 applications for the CBAC. The Board Subcommittee, consisting of Board President Chris Norwood and Trustee Michael Tsai, reviewed the applications during a special October 11 subcommittee meeting.

UPCOMING COMMUNITY MEETING
MUSD to host Board Room Infrastructure and Modernization community meeting on Oct. 28
Superintendent Cheryl Jordan and the Milpitas Unified School District Board of Education will host a second community gathering this month to share information, exchange ideas and gain valuable input from our MUSD families and community on ways to access our board meetings .

The community input meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. October 28 and will focus on Board Room Infrastructure and Modernization. It will be held in the MUSD Board Room, located at 1331 E. Calaveras Boulevard, Building 500.
