The
‘Next Gen Program’
is designed to help facilitate the transfer of farmland to a new generation of farmers, while also effectively helping to preserve the subject agricultural land from future development. Next Gen helps qualified young or beginning farmers who have trouble entering the agricultural profession because of relatively high farmland costs and lack of access to adequate financial capital to purchase farmland.
The kickoff of the Next Gen Program last year was a very successful one for Washington County. Three farms were selected for Young Farmers to purchase under an Option Contract concept. More than 350 acres were protected with the 3 Young Farmers being paid about $880,000 total for the initial purchase of the permanent easement protection plan.
