Cinnamongirl Scholars Discuss Recent Travels To The South
Meeting Civil Rights Icons, Visiting Historical Sites
Join artist and journalist Dana King as she interviews two Cinnamongirl scholars, Zaynab AbdulQadir-Morris, UC Berkeley 2019 graduate, and Ashley Hayes, currently a senior at the University of Michigan.

Our scholars joined the Commonwealth Club’s trip Understanding the Civil Rights Movement traveling to Jackson, Little Rock, Memphis, Birmingham, Selma and Montgomery this past March.

It was an emotional trip, filled with first-hand and expert accounts of what led up to that fateful day at the Lorraine Motel; what it was like to be mentored by Stokely Carmichael and be a young Freedom Rider; or what exactly happened the morning those four precious girls were bombed at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Alabama. Our scholars walked the halls of Central High School and heard stories of how the first Black students integrated the massive school.

Join us to hear our scholars discuss their trip, the horrific stories told, and their thoughts about the movement, our country’s past and present.
Cinnamongirl Kicks Off Program Teaching 20 Girls
How to Write, Own & Publish Their Stories
Cinnamongirl is proud to announce that the Write Your Story program has welcomed 20 young aspiring Cinnamongirl writers along with 11 esteemed authors. With prominent authors such as Lisa Moore Ramée, and Nikki Shannon Smith teaching our girls, our newest cohort is learning the fundamentals of voice, story structure, character development, plot, and the revision process, in order to take their writing passions and future careers to the next level.

We want to thank Deborah Santana, the East Bay Community Foundation, and the San Francisco Foundation for funding our program. We are grateful to Mina Witteman, our program designer, and the Bay Area Book Festival, our collaborative partner who helped bring this important work to fruition.

We Seek Writing Coaches
to Support our Write Your Story Cohort
We are offering each Cinnamongirl her very own writing coach! Consider supporting one of our writers in keeping her engaged, motivated, as she blazes through the challenges she will meet.

Writing Coach Responsibility:

  • Be a part of a larger group of coaches & renown award-winning authors supporting a young achiever virtually as she creates a 4000-word personal story.

  • Keep your Cinnamongirl writer engaged, encouraging her to write consistently, helping her get through difficult moments and to stay on track.

  • Lead and support peer feedback sessions, which include teaching how to give balanced feedback.

  • Assist in your mentee's revision process, teaching her, and helping her understand how to polish her writing.

  • 4-6 hours per month beginning October through April 2021.
