"Mary, Queen of Scots" sponsored by Catherine Ring & Reverend Stephen York
February 15-17, 2019
Biography/Drama/ History
124 minutes
R

"Mary Queen of Scots" explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart. Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I. Each young Queen beholds her "sister" in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth's sovereignty. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones - and change the course of history.

Happy Birthday Jonathan Buck
February 20, 2019 is the 300th Birthday of our founding father Jonathan Buck.

We at the Buck Memorial Library are honored to have on display his cane which he used, “when he designated the site of the settlement which is now the thriving little town of Bucksport….. used until his death. The cane had been handed down to the eldest son in each generation for seven generations.”
(Torrington Register, Aug 29, 1940)

The cane was gifted to the library in 1953 by the widow of Dr. Albert Buck and sometime later loaned to the Bucksport Historical Society which houses other Jonathan Buck items such as the transit that he used to lay out the town of Buckstown. These items can be viewed this summer when the museum opens.

For more information on Colonel Jonathan Buck and to view his cane visit the Buck Memorial Library.

Hancock County Food Drive
Sponsors Needed for 8th Annual Campaign
food drive 2019
The Hancock County Food Drive is seeking support from the local business community to meet its 2019 fundraising goal of $25,000.

The Food Drive is a month-long food collection and fundraising project that happens annually in March and directly supports food pantries, free meal programs, and school backpack programs across Hancock County. Since 2012, this collaborative project has worked to address the high rate of food insecurity our community faces during late winter and early spring. Members of the Hancock County Food Security Network work together throughout the month of March to raise funds and collect food, providing critical assistance for our neighbors during a time of year when resources are needed more than ever. In 2018, the Food Drive collected 4,250 food items and raised nearly $23,000 from sponsors, school collections, and private donors.

The 8th Annual Food Drive will kick off with a multi-site, county-wide donation drive on Saturday, March 2, 2019 . Area grocers, retailers, and downtown businesses will host food drive volunteers to collect food and raise money for participating food security organizations. If you are out shopping between the hours of 10am - 2pm on March 2nd, and you come across a person wearing a fruit or vegetable costume, please give what you can to this important cause! Every dollar counts.

A calendar of fundraising events is also being organized for the month of March, and includes a Lip Sync Contest at Fogtown Brewery on March 23rd, a social at the Serendipity Resale Clothing Boutique, a nutrition talk at Jesup Library, and more.

The Hancock County Food Drive is sponsored by United Way of Eastern Maine, Maine Community Foundation, Star 97.7, Maine Coast Mall, University of Maine Cooperative Extension, and Healthy Acadia, and is made possible by the efforts of the Hancock County Food Security Network members and their volunteers.

To become an official Food Drive Sponsor:
Make a donation of $50 or greater to the Hancock County Food Drive, and/or
Participate as a host site for our one-day kick-off donation drive on March 2nd from 10am-2pm
Other ways to support the Food Drive:
Donate: Text: FeedME2019 to 41444.
Collect food: Pantries need canned fruits, canned vegetables, peanut butter, canned tuna, whole wheat pasta, and healthy soups.

For more information about sponsoring the Hancock County Food Drive, contact Rachel Emus at (207) 667-7171 or [email protected].
