From the moment Patagonia opened their workwear concept store in Ballard last summer, they have jumped in to become involved and invested in our community. They are a featured Ballard Artwalk venue, Major sponsors for Ballard SeafoodFest and support local causes. We recently asked Patagonia Ballard's store manager, Matt McConeghy why the company chose Ballard for their Patagonia Workwear and provisions flagship store. This is what he had to share with us:
Why Ballard?
We created Patagonia's Workwear line, a new collection of durable clothing made with farmers, builders, ranchers, foresters, and environmental activists in mind, to offer superior, function-specific workwear that uses less harmful materials and withstands the rigors of the field or the job site. Historically, Ballard, with its unique position just a block away from the bustling Salmon Bay waterfront where shingle and lumber mills flourished, served as the city's central commercial district. We couldn't dream of a better place than Ballard to open our first store.
What does Reclaim, Reuse, Restore mean to your location?
For both environmental and aesthetic reasons, we use reclaimed materials to build out our stores. On this site, we utilized reclaimed scaffolding boards acquired from Earthwise Architectural Salvage to create the wood planking found on the back wall and in our Provisions section. We salvaged the smaller steel clad window frames from the Smith Tower in Seattle, and we repurposed picnic tables and benches to build the larger image frames. And, to preserve the building's historic significance, we also uncovered and restored the original 1905 floor and brick walls.
What is your Community Connection?
As the first and only concept store and flagship for the Patagonia Workwear product line, we want to give our customers a unique experience in Ballard. Hosting several community driven events every month, offering up delicious Patagonia Provisions tastings and becoming a hub for environmental activism are just some of the efforts that drive our mission. Patagonia wants our stores to be gifts to the community and the Ballard store is no different!
