"Tradition and Irreverence: Exploring the American Diaspora" at ArtSpace Maynard
in Maynard, Massachusetts through February 23

ArtSpace MaynardNathan Clark Bentley

"Tradition and Irreverence: Exploring the American Diaspora" is currently on view at ArtSpace Maynard until February 23. "Tradition and Irreverence" is a solo exhibition by painter Nathan Clark Bentley which takes a look at American culture through symbols and language. Bentley's work is robust with color and purpose. Bren Bataclan, Sketch of "Daly City, February 1981," 2017

The Pao Arts Center at the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center is now showing "Kulap," a solo exhibition featuring the newest work of Bren Bataclan, until April 28. Bataclan is a Cambridge-based Filipino American artist who grew up in the San Francisco area. The artist has a diverse background in art and design. Prior to practicing art full time Bataclan taught design and computer animation at UMass Amherst and the Museum School. His current exhibition is inspired by his family's immigration to California in 1981 and explores the conflicted feelings that came with it. in South Hadley, Massachusetts through May 27

Holyoke
Mary Lee Bendolph, "Ghost Pockets," 2003, mixed fabrics including denim, cotton, polyester, and synthetic wool, 85 x 72 in., Purchase with the Art Acquisition Endowment Fund, 2017.16

From now until May 27, "Piece Together: The Quilts of Mary Lee Bendolph" will be featured at Mount Holyoke College Art Museum. Bendolph has made over 150 quilts in her lifetime, adapting traditional African American designs to create beautiful and functional works of art that have been featured in Hallmark cards and American postage stamps. Her skill and craftsmanship also earned her a spot in "The Quilts of Gee's Bend," a 2002 exhibition showcasing the unique and beautiful quilts made by African American women from the community of Gee's Bend in Alabama. Piece Together is Bendolph's first solo exhibition, and each quilt is just as colorful, well-constructed, and beautiful as her illustrious career suggests. Dr. Alvia J. Wardlaw will present an opening lecture for the exhibition titled "I Keep Dreaming That Dream: The Life and Creative Genius of Mary Lee Bendolph" on January 31, at 5:30pm in Gamble Auditorium, and there will be several other programs occurring alongside "Piece Together" in the coming months.
