Dear Members of the UMS Nursing Community,

In the past few weeks, I have been reminded over and over how strong and resourceful our University community is. Our faculty, staff, and students are joining together and showing tremendous resilience to meet the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Helping to meet those challenges has taken on new meaning with a new agreement between the University of Maine System and MEMA, (Maine's Emergency Management Agency). The agreement designates UMS as an agent of the state with the possibility that its people may have opportunities to participate in broader community efforts in coordination with MEMA to help in the public fight against the coronavirus.

Even before the agreement was reached, our UMS Nursing faculty and staff were working tirelessly to open our Spring semester, and our students demonstrated a true team spirit by asking how they might put their new skills to work and join efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 and treat those diagnosed with the disease.

In short, we all recognize that there has never been a greater need for individuals with clinical experience to help support our hospitals, which are already reaching out directly to MEMA and UMS for support.

Please consider ways in which you may be able to help. We all have a special opportunity now to think about ways to share our abilities and availability and assist in the public response to this critical situation, and doing so may well advance your interests in engaging with others in ways important to your education .

Please take a moment to complete this Google Form, which is designed to collect information about how you may wish to contribute, whether in a medical capacity or in other ways. Your voluntary and optional information will be used to provide a connection to those most in need of your abilities and dedication to helping others in coordination with MEMA's assessment of the most pressing public needs. The sooner we can learn of your particular interests, the more quickly we can work with MEMA to determine how you can best help.

Please complete the Google Form no later than Wednesday, April 1 -- though you are certainly free to fill it out later if you wish.

Thank you for your consideration. I am confident that the University of Maine System and its dedicated faculty, staff, and students will continue to do their part to serve the State in its time of greatest need.

Sincerely,
