NEW Bicycling & Walking Infrastructure Plan
|
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has initiated a project to develop Active Transportation Plans (ATP) for each of its twelve districts, covering the entire State of California. District 5 which is our CALTRANS district is the first in the state to start their ATP. The project is identifying existing bicycle and pedestrian facilities on the State Highway System and nearby locations where improvements are needed. Each plan will be data-driven and will focus on developing context-appropriate recommendations on and adjacent to the Caltrans State Highway System. Throughout the study process, there will be an emphasis on social equity - strengthening and reconnecting disadvantaged communities and providing safer alternatives for people who walk, bicycle, and use transit.

The
County's NEW Operational Plan

The County just adopted its first two-year 2019-21 Budget on June 25th that will establish a longer financial picture of the challenges that lie ahead. The County's Budget also is accompanied for the first time ever by an Operational Plan which activates the County's Strategic Plan, Vision Santa Cruz County click HERE to review the strategic plan. This Operational Plan includes 178 objectives that are connected to the Vision Santa Cruz County's "Focus Areas" with measurable targets and outcomes across 22 departments working collaboratively to provide equitable improvements for all Santa Cruz County residents. Among these objectives are plans to eliminate medical clinic wait times, provide a feasibility study for neighborhood courts, review the County's model of public defender services, make traffic improvements and resurface 25 miles of local roads, develop a new one-stop permitting center in the Planning Department, completing LEO's Haven all accessible playground, create a new recreation camp for County youth, expand the County's Thrive by Three program, expand voter access, provide a sustainability update to the General Plan, and expand housing opportunities including for farm workers.

SC/SC Roundtable Meeting Update

The Santa Clara/Santa Cruz Roundtable held their June meeting in Santa Cruz. Two FAA representatives provided an update on the FAA's work regarding the transition back to the Big Sur ground track. They said the Full Working Group meeting of FAA route designers, air traffic controllers, airport officials, and industry reps was held June 4-5. The meeting was described as "successful", and that they have a route design that meets the intent of the Select Committee. It will now undergo safety evaluations and environmental review. No specific timeline was provided, though many in the room asked for one. The impact of about 40 community members in red shirts in attendance was evident, and I spoke for my allotted minute along with several members of the public. The FAA heard repeatedly how important this work is and that it needs to be expedited. I see this as very good news that demonstrates both their commitment and real progress toward returning the flight path to its historic track. I will continue to press for completion of the work and stay in close communication with the offices of Eshoo and Panetta.

Movie Night in Soquel and Live Oak

Last year my office helped produce the first Soquel Family Movie Nights at the Heart of Soquel Plaza Park. Lots of people came out and enjoyed free movies under the stars with their family and friends. This year we are expanding to Live Oak on Fridays in June, July and August. The first Friday of each month, Soquel Movie Nights will start at dusk. We are partnering with Tortilla Flats for a special movie night in July highlighting Frida Khalo. Along with the movie No Manches Frida, Tortilla Flats will be hosting a Frida Kahlo look-a-like contest. On the third Friday of each month we are initiating Family Movie Nights at Felt Street Park in Live Oak. We have a wonderful lineup of films that the whole family can enjoy. Food will be available at each movie night and snacks and popcorn will be sold to support our local schools. Special thanks to Kaiser Permanente for being our presenting sponsor this year and to the County Parks staff for helping with the screenings. Bring your low-backed chair or beach blanket and come join the fun. See you at the movies!
