Anuradha Koirala described the trafficking challenge in Nepal and bordering countries and how she and her organization has rescued numerous children from trafficking since 1993. Maiti Nepal employs former trafficking victims to prevent the luring of targets by traffickers. Kusum Kaul Vyas gave an insightful visual presentation on the types of trafficking in South Asia in highlighting the pandemic increase in sextortion by moneylenders and domestic violence in India to exploit trafficking victims and called for funding of non-profit organizations. Mike Singh spoke about the role of US NFL football games in fueling trafficking, and the public education on sex trafficking around the February 2020 Miami Superbowl; how Atlanta, Georgia, the crossroad of sex trafficking is combatting the issue. He also highlighted the sexual exploitation of Philippino women in Middle Eastern countries, and human trafficking in Africa and South America of displaced refugees as big business. He suggested heavy embargoes on countries that allow traffickers to thrive and strip human beings of their dignity. Mahbooba Akhter Kabita spoke about the connection between domestic violence and migration and trafficking in Bangladesh and how women and girls are discriminated against and the need to change the patriarchal system.

CWNY Hosts THIRD Korean Women’s Issues Roundtable
On August 13, Eun-Kyung Kim, Executive Director, YWCA of Queens; Jeehae Fischer, Executive Director, Korean American Family Service Center; and Sarah Koppalakonda, Development Officer, Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York, Inc. (KCS) joined Victoria Pilotti, CWNY President, and Malini Shah, CWNY Board Member in a roundtable discussion on women’s issues that affect the Korean community.
Dating Violence
The group discussed a past successful event to educate youth on dating violence. Several university interns were tasked by the program coordinator with organizing events to educate young men and women about relationship violence. They created speed dating, masquerade ball, Valentiine's Day party events that all commenced with an engaging game show with relationship themed questions. The youth at the parties were tricked into learning about dating violence and wanted to learn more and bring their partners to future events.
CWNY would like to partner with organizations to host similar events for youth dating violence awareness and prevention.
Elder Abuse
In isolation, elder abuse is heightened. In one case, parents are living in their car for fear of living with their abusive son who most likely needs mental health services. The father is more accepting of shelter services and admitting their son
for psychological testing than the mother, who refuses to get help for or leave their son. Services are available, however, reluctance due to shame somehow prevents parents from seeking safety from and mental health assistance for their violent children.
