Early Childhood and Lower School
Today, students were so excited for their first Shabbat assembly of the year!
With lively singing, dancing and stories, the spirited assembly was the perfect way to get ready for Shabbat. Early Childhood and Lower School participate in monthly Shabbat assemblies throughout the year. Enjoy a glimpse of our students enjoying today's assembly!
Middle School
Middle School faculty member Mrs. Srividhya Sundaram was one of eight selected as a  Science Friday Educator - 2018,  among a record number of applicants nationwide. Science Friday is the trusted source for news and stories about science and has been honored with dozens of awards for their high quality science journalism.

The  Science Friday Educator Collaborative  conducts a search for creative, highly motivated, and dedicated STEM educators to participate in the collaborative development of new multimedia-driven education resources. The selected Science Friday Educators work with the Science Friday team to produce and share compelling approaches to STEM education. As a part of this amazing opportunity, Mrs. Sri committed to an intensive month-long training and development cycle with fellow educator collaborators, Science Friday staff, and expert colleagues in the fields of science, education, media, and publishing. In the future, Mrs. Sri will be field testing some of the wonderful resources created by other educators in her cohort.

As part of the Collaborative, Mrs Sri developed a resource focusing on paper engineering, renewable resources and circuitry for grades 6 to 8. You can learn more about the project here .

The Middle School's popular lunchtime "Parsha and Popcorn" series and the "Parsha and Popcorn to Go" series was expanded today so that all students could enjoy. The Parsha and Pops program was introduced this morning to the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. All students are also invited to enjoy Parsha and Popcorn Deluxe during lunch as well. We hope that these programs will enhance students' preparation for Shabbat and Shabbat table discussions.
The opening session for our Names, Not Numbers Holocaust documentary film project was held this morning. Through
the project, eighth graders will learn interviewing, film making and editing
skills from professionals to assist them
in preserving the stories of Holocaust survivors by creating a documentary film to be screened in the Spring. Students heard what to expect from the year-long program from the program creator Tova Rosenberg and Rabbi Rubin, as well as personal reflections from RKYHS eleventh grader Maya Minsky who spoke about the lasting impact that participating in Names Not Numbers has had on her.

The new cohort of Yeshiva University fellows have begun their weekly Friday visits at RKYHS. As YU fellows, Orah Schlanger (JKHA '10/RKYHS '14) and Jack Ganchrow spend their Friday mornings at RKYHS participating in beit midrash learning with students, Erev Shabbat Tisches, meeting with students, and sharing divrei Torah with various classes.
For this week's SEED speaker program, RKYHS students heard from Tony McAleer, a former organizer for the White Aryan Resistance (WAR). Mr. McAleer spoke to the students about his background, his journey and his personal transformation away from living a life of hate. Mr. McAleer is currently active with the organization Life After Hate, a nonprofit organization with a mission to help people leave hate groups, particularly white supremacy groups.
A Look at Chumash at JKHA and RKYHS
We are excited to launch a new feature in Kushner Connections that will
take a holistic look each week at how different subject areas are covered throughout each of our divisions, from our youngest learners to our oldest high school students.  This week we take a look at Chumash...

Dvar Torah
In the story of Creation Hashem refers to the creation of light as good. Rashi comments that the light being referred to is the special light hidden away for Tzadikim in the next world. Seeing that sunlight was created on the 4th day Rashi understands this light to be spiritual in nature. This helps us understand a Rashi in Parshat Shmot upon the birth of Moshe. The Torah mentions that Yocheved saw that her baby was good. Rashi comments that upon the birth of Moshe the house filled with light. Rashi connects the usage of the word light and the word good to develop this pshat. This special hidden light will ultimately benefit this new born who will become the leader of Klal Yisrael. This innovative Drasha using the Hebrew language is another indicator of the beauty of the language and the depth of the Torah.

Shabbat Shalom!
