Black Beauty Sunday, August 18, 2-5pm at Center for Whole Communities, 209 Battery St, Burlington. Facilitated by Mercedes Mack and Zymora Davinchi. This program hopes to help those of the African diaspora understand the history of black beauty and how these beauty standards have evolved over time in the hands of colonization, slavery, and Jim Crow. It aims to encourage them to embrace their beauty and be proud of being black. This program was designed by and for people of African descent. FREE

Statement on Israel, Palestine, and Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions

Approved by Peace & Justice Center Board of Directors
Over the years, the Peace & Justice Center (PJC) has raised concerns over the militaristic, anti-democratic tendencies of many countries as well as criticized U.S. foreign policy, military aid, and sales that exacerbate tensions and feed continued violence in the world.
The Israeli-Palestinian situation continues to deteriorate. The Peace & Justice Center is committed to nonviolence and seeks a world in which Palestinians and Israelis live in equality and dignity, and with national self-determination. We are both saddened and angered by the continued violence perpetrated by Hamas and the State of Israel and by United States' complicity in it all.
In this statement, we focus our concern on the State of Israel. It has the greatest military and institutional power in the region and is in a position to be a force for peaceful change. It is also the most democratic nation in the region, and the PJC is committed to its survival.

From the Blog: White Nationalism: Fight Racism and Anti-Semitism Simutaneously

There has been a clear uptick in overt White Nationalism in Vermont. Off the top of my head I know of Patriot Front fliers that were posted in St Albans, Richmond, and Winooski, a large Patriot Front banner dropped off a downtown parking garage in Burlington, and KKK displays in Shelburne. Multiple Synagogues have been marred with graffiti, a Hinesburg High School and a farm in Craftsbury were both defaced, and an immigrant POC-owned market as well as the Pride Center in Burlington have also been marked. The fear and stress of living as a person of color, Jewish, Muslim, queer, an immigrant, and other marginalized folks, is so palpable that people who don't live those identities can no longer deny it. Marginalized people have always been threatened. The threats are more visible to more people now.
Groups will need to band together to overcome this hatred. One of the problems we've seen on the left is the way our groups splinter. We lack the decades-long strategies and finances that conservatives have.

| Action Highlight: Resisting Trumps Immigration Policies |
Don't let the horror of what's happening in our country paralyze you. The situation is not new (see the History of Concentration Camps in the US) but because there is heightened awareness, we are in a moment of possible change. Below are things that you can do to help with the humanitarian crisis created by inhumane immigration policies. This is not a time to sit back. Please do at least one of these suggestions.
Donate your frequent flier miles:
- Migrant Justice, our statewide organizing group for immigrant farmworkers in Vermont.
- American Civil Liberties Union is focusing on defending the rights of immigrant families
- The Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) is a non-profit focused on "providing free and low-cost legal services to under-served immigrant children, families and refugees in Central and South Texas
- Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) is "helping families at the US border get legal advice and translation services," and is interviewing families to document what is happening to ensure they are reunited as quickly as possible.
- The Florence Project provides free legal services to detained immigrants in Arizona.

to send more lawyers (particularly Spanish-speaking immigration lawyers) to the detention centers and refugee camps where help is desperately needed.

- If you are in the Burlington-area, please join us for Community Voices for Immigrant Rights to plan strategies and actions. This Thursday, 5:30-7:30, 241 No Winooski Ave (Rights and Democracy's office). Dinner and childcare provided.
- Lights for Liberty: A Vigil to End Human Concentration Camps. July 12th is being called for as a national day of action to close the migrant and refugee camps that have been created along the US-Mexico border and inside the interior, and to let all the migrants and refugees into the country with protected status. This is also being organized under the auspices of Light of Liberty. So far, there are 12 events across Vermont.
- New Hampshire Immigrant Solidarity Network is planning a Solidarity Walk from Concord, NH to Dover August 21 to 24. There are other groups organizing to walk there from Boston and to bike there from Montpelier. Sign up for the Concord leg here. They will converge in Madbury for the final part of the walk and have an action at the jail on the 24th.
