Bluebird Nesting Box Program
Last week, our wildlife biologists began building bluebird boxes to replace roughly 200 boxes that are currently placed around the island as a part of the Town's Bluebird Nesting Box Program. Approximately 100 boxes are being built this year and another 100 boxes next year. Bluebirds prefer open habitats which are limited on Kiawah with exception to the marsh and golf courses. Bluebirds are cavity nesters and will make their nest in old woodpecker holes but in the absence of these cavities, they will nest in nest boxes placed in the proper habitat. The nest boxes provide an artificial nesting cavity for bluebirds and other cavity-nesting birds such as Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, and Carolina Wrens. A dedicated group of volunteers monitors and maintains detailed records of nesting success each year on the grounds of all five Kiawah golf courses, Night Heron Park, and The Sanctuary,
