ANAHEIM ARTS COUNCIL SHUTTING DOWN AFTER 41 YEARS

The Anaheim Arts Council, established in 1977 by the City of Anaheim, and incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 2002,
has announced that it will close its doors in September. In a letter dated March 2, Anaheim Arts Council Board President Carol Latham wrote: "This was not an easy decision. It is the result of in-depth internal discussions and reviews of other mitigating circumstances." Richard Stein, President & CEO of Arts Orange County, commented, "With a population of over 350,000, Anaheim is Orange County's largest city, and has a robust community of artists living and working there, as well as important arts organizations like Chance Theater and MUZEO. It is certainly distressing to think that a community of that size and resources could no longer sustain a local arts council. We are hopeful that the City's leadership will make it a priority to address the needs of the Anaheim arts community moving forward." In her letter, Latham outlined some of the Anaheim Arts Council's accomplishments over the years: "Since 2004 we have provided $53,000 in scholarships for high school graduates pursuing an arts-related education; provided $174,000 to organize the free Children's Arts Festival which will continue this 26th year on May 19th, offering interactive arts experiences for children; recognized 200 businesses and sites for their Art In Public Places contributions. Through privately raised fundraising and donations we have been able award almost $391,000 in grants to arts organizations for numerous music, dance, drama and arts which reached tens of thousands of our citizens annually. In 2000 we were an essential force in the city promoting Anaheim's first Cultural Plan; we hosted the first-ever Sacred Arts Festival in 2015; we were members of the charter committee for the quarterly Art Crawl Experience - now in its 8th year and, most recently were members of the inaugural Poet Laureate Committee." Anaheim Arts Council will hold its final general meeting on Thursday, May 3 at 5:30 pm at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 East Center Street.

PACIFIC SYMPHONY & PACIFIC CHORALE AT CARNEGIE HALL

OC FAIR & EVENT CENTER REVEALS MAKEOVER PLANS

From the OC REGISTER:"The OC Fair & Event Center, home of the Orange County Fair, could undergo a $169 million makeover, including a bigger administration building, more parking and the demolition of an equestrian center. The center's Board of Supervisors on Thursday, April 26, will review draft concepts for a master plan defining what the 150-acre event venue will look like over the next decade. Staff members began working on the plan in 2016 and hosted community workshops to get ideas on what people wanted at the facility. The board will consider a tentative plan on Thursday [April 26, 9 am]."

Mechelle Lawrence Adams Joins the ArtsOC Board

MECHELLE LAWRENCE ADAMS, Executive Director of
Mission San Juan Capistrano for the past 15 years, was elected to the Board of Directors of Arts Orange County at its April 18 meeting. "Mechelle has been a great enthusiast for Arts Orange County for the past ten years, partnering with us on a number of endeavors," commented ArtsOC President & CEO Rick Stein. "So, we were delighted when she expressed interest in stepping up her involvement. She has made a tremendous impact in our community as leader of one of Orange County's oldest and most important cultural heritage sites." Mechelle shared her thoughts about joining the ArtsOC Board: "I am very excited to be part of the effort to promote, stimulate, and support Orange County Arts. I am a big believer that old places can and should utilize arts programming to generate awareness and community connection thereby leading to a fuller appreciation and further preservation of historic sites."

Fellowship Opportunity for OC Nonprofit Organizations

The Gianneschi 2018 Fellowships in Nonprofit Leadership are designed to jumpstart the nonprofit career of a graduating student by providing them a paid summer internship with on OC-LA nonprofit organization. The student will receive $1,500 for completing a 120-hour internship with the host organization who will receive $1,000 in support. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Monday, May 8th by 10:00 PM.
