A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
|
In Matot-Masei, The Torah recalls the 40-year journey of the Israelites as they wandered in the desert and slowly headed toward the Promised Land. We are a people who have always journeyed. From the moment that Abraham was first told to leave his fathers home, until the moment that the Israelites stood looking into the Promised Land, our people were always on the move.
But the journey did not stop once our ancestors entered the Promised Land. Once inside the land, we needed to conquer the indigenous peoples. Once they conquered the land, neighboring tribes and countries were constantly attacking our ancestors.
We were ultimately dispersed by the Babylonians, but were able to return within 70 years. We were then conquered by the Romans and forced to disperse for nearly 2,000 years. During this time we were journeying. We moved from country to country. We moved from home to home. We were welcomed in, and then kicked out.
Finally we were allowed back in to our land.
Because of our history, we inherently know that a time and a place is just that; a time and a place. We see our life as a journey; each relationship as a journey, Each hour as a journey. Live each day of the journey as if it is the day that you will enter the Promised Land.
Go for yourself. Go for your loved ones. Go for the Holy One. But go.
Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

THE WEEK THAT WAS... |
Sundays breakfast and update on Israel was a huge success. The Israeli meal featuring Shakshuka prepared by the Rabbi & David Shatz and the fact-filled presentation by Dr. Eric Mandel were appreciated by all in attendance as our synagogue continues to provide important programming to the community. Yasher Koach to Rabbi Jay and David Shatz for creating this event and to David and Diane Hoffman helping with the clean up.
Here is the recipe for the Shakshuka:
1/3 cup olive oil
1 large onion diced
2 bell peppers of different colors cut into 3/4 inch strips
2 tablespoons of tomato paste
3-4 cups chipped tomatoes
2-4 garlic cloves, crushed
1 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoons ground caraway seeds
Pinch of cayenne pepper- optional
Salt & pepper
6-8 eggs
2 teaspoons chopped parsley or cilantro
in a very large pan heat the oil and add the onions. After 3-5 minutes add the peppers and let saute for 7 - 10 minutes. Add the tomatoes, garlic and dry spices and cover. Let cook for 7 minutes on medium to high heat. Make some gaps with a wooden spoon in the sauce and carefully break 6 eggs into the gaps. Sprinkle with salt and cover the pan. Cook over low-medium heat for 10-12 minutes, just until the eggs are set. Sprinkle with parsley or cilantro and serve hot with fresh bread.

AUGUST BAZAAR
SISTERHOOD BOOK GROUP
Eight members of the Sisterhood Book Group met on Monday, July 9th, to discuss the book Forest Green by Nicole Krauss. It is always enjoyable to get together to discuss any book that we have all read!!
For the August meeting, we are reading Nothing is Forgotten by Peter Golden. This is a novel about the life-changing journey of a young man who travels from New Jersey to Khrushchev's Russia and the beaches of Southern France as he finds love and discovers the long-hidden secrets about his Jewish heritage.
In 1950s New Jersey, Michael Daniels launches a radio show in the storage room of his Russian-Jewish grandmother's candy store. Not only does the show become a local hit because of his running satires of USSR leader Nikita Khrushchev, but half a world away, it picks up listeners in a small Soviet city.
There, with rock and roll leaking in through bootlegged airwaves, Yulianna Kosoy-a war orphan in her mid-twenties-is sneaking American goods into the country with her boss, Der Schmuggler.
But just as Michael's radio show is taking off, his grandmother is murdered in the candy store. Why anyone would commit such an atrocity against such a warm, affable woman is anyone's guess. But she had always been secretive about her past and, as Michael discovers, guarded a shadowy ancestral history. In order to solve the mystery of who killed her, Michael sets out to Europe to learn where he-and his grandmother-really came from.
Please consider joining us on Monday morning, August 13th, at 10:30 in the JCC of LBI library to share in the discussion! We are tentatively to meet for the last time this summer on September 17th - and that book title will be chosen by the group in August.
If you would like to have your name added to the group email list, please contact Paula Hait at [email protected].
Happy reading!!!
