Welcome
Dear ,

Greetings from Weston, where spring has finally sprung and we're enjoying these first days of our early summer!

I am sure you know that REALTORS work long hours and we're "always" on duty, so we like to get away when we can to recharge our batteries and get ready for the next busy selling season. This past winter, Kathy and her husband Jay traveled to Nicaragua and Florida (with a side trip to Cuba!), and my husband John and I escaped mud season to enjoy some time on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. We all had a great time away and as Richard Nixon was famous for (sorry for the comparison!), we are tanned, rested and ready for what we hope will be a busy selling season this summer!

While traveling in Mexico and other ocean-side areas of the world, I have become dismayed at the proliferation of large and small pieces of plastic on the beaches. To that end, I have a new mantra: NO DRINKING STRAWS! Upon arriving home, I promptly purchased several reusable stainless steel and silicone drinking straws and have stocked my office, home and car. I'm doing my part to help Mother Earth and I hope you will join me! #NoStraw #JustSayNoToTheStraw Apologies for being a little preachy!

Wishing you the best summer possible! Stay in touch and we will do the same.

REALTOR Food Drive in June
It's time to spread the love and be generous with our neighbors less fortunate than us! Mary Mitchell Miller Real Estate (MMMRE) and the South Central Vermont Board of REALTORS, in partnership with the Vermont Association of Realtors®, will participate in a statewide Food Drive from June 18-29!

Lots of food drives focus on the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays . . . and that's great! However, children and families often go hungry when school is out for the summer and children don't have access to lunch and food assistance programs.

Your contributions will stay local and support Londonderry's Neighbor's Pantry. Here is a list of most needed items:
  • Boxed meals - macaroni & cheese, hamburger helper, etc.
  • Cereal - all varieties
  • Canned fruit and vegetables (all varieties)
  • Canned meat - beef, ham, chicken, etc.
  • Canned fish - tuna, salmon
  • Canned soup and chili
  • Pasta of any kind and pasta sauce (all varieties)
  • Peanut Butter
  • Portable, ready-to-eat snack foods (kid friendly)
  • Rice - any type
  • Shelf-stable juices (i.e., not frozen or in need of refrigeration)
Mary Mitchell Miller Real Estate (MMMRE) will be collecting donations of food and money at our offices at 620 Main Street in Weston between June 18 - 29. We will deliver everything to the Neighbors Pantry at the conclusion of the drive. Checks in any amount may be made payable to Neighbor's Pantry and mailed or delivered to MMMRE.
IMPORTANT: Please make sure
donated items are NOT expired.

Weston Playhouse Unveils Blockbuster 2018 Season
Vermont's award-winning Weston Playhouse Theatre Company unveils a blockbuster 2018 line-up, the largest in the theatre's history. The season includes three productions on the company's Main Stage at the historic Weston Playhouse and four productions at its stunning new Second Stage, Weston Playhouse at Walker Farm, plus pre-theatre dining, post-show Cabaret, and periodic special events.

Brad Standley and Julie Benko - the cast of ONCE. 2017 photo by Hubert Schriebl
The Main Stage series kicks off with Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, Our Town. Last seen at the Playhouse in 1973 with the late Sam Lloyd, Sr. as the all-knowing Stage Manager, the new production will feature his brother, film and TV actor Christopher Lloyd, in that pivotal role. Sponsored by Manchester Designer Outlets and directed by Steve Stettler, performances run June 21 to July 7.

Next up on the Main Stage is American's most iconic musical, West Side Story. Star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria fight to keep their forbidden love alive in a powerful retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet set on New York's West Side. Weston's production celebrates the centennial of author Arthur Laurents, composer Leonard Bernstein, and director/choreographer Jerome Robbins, and is directed by Tim Fort with Robbins' original choreography recreated by Felicity Stiverson. Performances run July 12 through August 4.

Four lively weeks of high-energy, rock-and-roll nostalgia wrap the Main Stage roster with Broadway's recent phenom, Million Dollar Quartet. A triple threat cast recreates the most famous jam session in American musical history and performs hits like "Hound Dog," "Blue Suede Shoes," and "Walk the Line," bringing Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis to life onstage. Sponsored by Casella and directed by Michael Berresse, performances run August 9 to September 2.

The company's Second Stage at Weston Playhouse at Walker Farm opens with Weston's 2018 Young Company of talented undergrads in a musical for young families. Based on L.M. Montgomery's beloved novel, Anne of Green Gables is a one-hour musical by Broadway veterans Gretchen Cryer and Nancy Ford. The spirited show follows orphan Anne Shirley as she discovers the true meaning of family, friendship, and home. Directed by Tim Fort and Piper Goodeve, Anne of Green Gables plays at family-friendly times and prices from June 13 to June 30.

2015's groundbreaking musical Fun Home follows on the Second Stage at Walker Farm. Based on Vermont author/cartoonist Alison Bechdel's best-selling graphic memoir, this five-time Tony Award winner brings us into Alison's world as she grows and grapples with her dysfunctional family, her sexuality, and her father's secrets. Directed by Malcolm Ewen and starring Weston favorites Susan Haefner and David Bonanno, performances run July 5 to July 28.

Continuing a trend of hot new titles at Walker, Weston presents the Vermont Premiere of the Broadway hit, A Doll's House Part 2. Nominated for eight Tony Awards, Lucas Hnath's comedy picks up where Ibsen's famed 19th-century drama, A Doll's House, concludes. Mary B. Robinson (Weston's All My Sons and Copenhagen) directs, with performances from August 2 to August 26.

Extending the theatre season into Vermont's fabulous fall foliage, Weston proudly presents August Wilson's Pulitzer and Tony-nominated Two Trains Running. The seventh in Wilson's ten-part series chronicling the African-American experience, Wilson's play is Weston's fourth annual American Masters production. Directed by Reginald L. Douglas and sponsored by The Vermont Country Store, performances run September 27 to October 21, including daytime school matinees.

To round out your experience, pre-theatre cocktails and farm to table fare are available at the café on the lower level of the Playhouse. Plus, Weston's legendary Cabaret serves up a zany hour-long music and comedy revue, featuring Young Company and Equity actors, after each of the three Main Stage shows.

Individual tickets are available online at www.westonplayhouse.org or by phone through the Box Office on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 AM until 3 PM: (802) 824-5288. Seasons Subscriptions are available in two exciting packages with preferred pricing and special perks.

Green Mountain Gourmet
 Cauliflower Rice
I'm not usually one to jump on food fads, but a new favorite in my household is cauliflower "rice" and this recipe is easy, fast and delicious. And, best of all, it can be served warm or cold. So, with summer picnic potluck season upon us, I thought this would be a great recipe to share this month.
vegetables_basket.jpg

  • 1 large head of cauliflower (florets only)
  • 1 large yellow onion (small dice)
  • 1 large clove of garlic (minced well)
  • 1/4 cup golden raisins (regular will do, but the yellow ones look prettier!)
  • 1/2 cup chopped, sliced or slivered almonds
  • 2 +/- tablespoons of safflower or vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons turmeric
  • 2 teaspoons powdered cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup tightly-packed, chopped flat-leaf parsley (or cilantro, if you prefer)

1. Using a food processor and a medium dicing blade, process the cauliflower in 2-3 batches to create a rice-like batch of cauliflower. I usually use the pulse setting for more control.
2. In a large skillet, heat 1+/- tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat and sauté the onion for about 5-7 minutes until light golden color appears. Turn the heat down if needed.
3. Add the garlic and stir for a minute of two making sure the garlic does not burn. Add another teaspoon or two of oil and the cauliflower. Sauté for another 7-10 minutes, stirring gently every minute or so until the vegetables are tender and cooked through but still firm.
4. Add pepper, turmeric, cumin and mix well. Continue to stir.
5. Add the raisins and almonds and mix well.
6. Remove from heat, place on a serving platter or bowl and garnish with parsley/cilantro and serve!

Note: This recipe is easily multiplied and adapts well to lots of spices and flavors. Mix and match and enjoy!
