Eva's Culinary Graduates Open a Restaurant
|
|
When
Chefs Rivas and Rivero opened a Peruvian Restaurant on Main Street in Paterson this May, they were celebrating a shared dream.
The Culinary School at Eva’s Village
had something to celebrate too – the chefs are the school's first alumni to open a restaurant. Mayor Sayegh joined guests, Culinary School staff, and students to sample a tasting menu at the restaurant’s grand opening.
“Their determination and enterprise are an inspiration to our students and to our community,”
commented Chef James Cwynar, Director of the school.
After working in other fields for many years, the couple enrolled in the six-month certificate program at Eva’s Culinary School to make their dream come true. There, they mastered basic culinary techniques, earned ServSafe® certification, learned to cook for a crowd, and gained hands-on experience by interning in commercial kitchens.

After graduating, the chefs returned to their native Peru for a month-long course to polish their traditional cooking skills. They named the restaurant
Wasiyki
, which means
“welcome to my house”
in Quechua, an indigenous South American language, to offer a
"taste of home"
to the Paterson community.
Chefs Juana Rivas, (L) Marco Rivero, (R) and their daughters celebrated the opening of Wasiyki Restaurant with Mayor Sayegh (C), in May. Read

Moving into an Eva’s Village apartment a few months ago felt like a homecoming to 75-year-old Joseph V. A team of Eva's staff and county social service providers also celebrated this happy move, the result of months of hard work to secure permanent, affordable housing with supportive services for him.
"We have a strong community in the building, but what makes our community unique is its strong connection to the comprehensive care and support services available at Eva's Village,"
Eva's Case Manager,Tiffany. Douglas explained.
A Paterson native, Joseph grew up on Slater Street and attended P.S. 3, just blocks away from his new home. . . Read
