NEWS & UPDATES
COLLEGE NEWS
I am looking forward to reviewing the work submitted for the PAC College of Architecture Prize, due today. If you haven't yet submitted (there is a $2,500 prize), you still have time! Submit to amanda.metcalf@unl.edu by 5:00 today.

You have done the work, identified need, created a proposed solution, now what? Your work thus far has likely revolved around graphic or written communication. My message to you this morning addresses the verbal aspects of “telling the project’s story.” As you finalize projects and prepare for final reviews or finalizing theses work, I want to remind you to tell the story in a compelling way. What is the need you have addressed and how have you approached the issue(s)? Who are the people affected or involved? What are the salient facts or research involved? What moved you to approach the issue in the manner you have? Articulate these and consider some of the best story-tellers and their approach as examples.

Advice from the Harvard Business Review “How to Tell a Great Story” includes: “Every storytelling exercise should begin by asking: Who is my audience and what is the message I want to share with them?” Each decision about your story should flow from those questions. Importantly, “don’t make yourself the star of your own story” but remember the story is about the project, issue, or people/environment and how it is designed to affect them.

ARCHITECTURE
This is it! The time has come to wish you all the very best for this Final Review Week. It will be an exciting and intense time as students and faculty are closing out the semester and, for many, their academic career here at the college. The final reviews give opportunity to see work from all levels of our programs and to get the outside opinions of our guest critics. As students and faculty, we should take time to attend reviews other than just our own, to get a new perspective while pausing for reflection as well. Best of luck, one and all! More-

The meeting with Don Gross was an informal opportunity to learn from one of the CRP program’s most distinguished and “seasoned” alumni. Gross, a native of Minnesota, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in geography at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota. More-
INTERIOR DESIGN
I look forward to seeing everyone in at reviews this week. I know we get wrapped up in the ritual of studio reviews, but also be sure to invest in the remaining tasks required to have a successful ending to all other courses you are enrolled in.

I have two reports of good news this week for the Interior Design Program. First, student Savannah Scoville and her research mentor Dr. Hong. Savannah’s poster, “An Evaluation of the Design Innovations in the Newly Renovated Adele Learning Commons” was selected as the top poster from the College of Architecture at the Spring Research Fair 2018. LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
In the face of rapidly changing times, there has never been a more challenging period for education. These volatile conditions create situations where the new normal can make the use of precedents seem suspect. Add to this reality, the increasing complexity of the challenges facing human civilization and the natural world, and it becomes doubly difficult to determine how to take on these wicked problems. This requires education to prepare graduates who have a strong disciplinary education, are flexible thinkers and embrace change. Traditionally the design professions have valued control as a characteristic held in high esteem. More-
