SPRING 2018
Events Recap
CASA Day at the Capitol took place on February 14th with 300 CASA staff, board members and volunteers across the state in attendance. Also joining the group were several child welfare community partners. The group gathered in Atlanta to thank legislators for their continued support of the CASA organization in Georgia. The day included remarks by Nyeelah Inniss, a former foster youth, and a thank you luncheon for legislators. Click here to view photos from the event.


The "CASA on the Catwalk" Georgia CASA Luncheon & Fashion Show fundraiser was held on March 28th and raised about $65,000! The event honored The Junior League of Atlanta for its commitment to improving the lives of women and children in our community and for its assistance with the start-up of Georgia CASA and our affiliate CASA program in Fulton County. Bishop Robert C. Wright of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta was the keynote speaker. Models sported fashions from Tootsies and Guffey's, with Jovita Moore of WSB-TV as emcee. A silent auction, with many wonderful auction items, was also held during the event. Click here to view photos from the event.

Because of the support of people like you, children in foster care have hope for a brighter future! During the months of April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month and May as National Foster Care Month, we thank all supporters of the CASA organization and child welfare in general. You help to address the problems of child abuse and neglect and champion a brighter future for children in foster care.

Help spread the word among your family and friends about the problem of child abuse and neglect, why children are placed in foster care, the need for more foster parents and the need for CASA volunteers to serve all children in foster care in Georgia.

CASA Story: Siblings Adopted Together

Four siblings were placed in foster care due to their mother's neglect. CASA volunteer "Mr. Willie" was assigned to them, and he closely monitored the children's case. When the mother's time was up to work on her case plan and she had not made adequate progress, Mr. Willie assisted the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) in identifying an unknown father and out-of-state relative.

When the siblings were placed with the out-of-state relative, Mr. Willie didn't stop his advocacy - he visited them in person, over 500 miles away. He soon discovered that the children's best interests were not being met and brought this to the court's attention. As a result, the children were removed from the relative's home and a year later, they became free for adoption.

Due to his vast knowledge about the case, Mr. Willie was able to easily assist in finding a potential adoptive home. Mr. Willie's commitment and persistence were a big contributing factor to the siblings being adopted together in the summer of 2017!

Affiliate Program Highlights

Affiliate CASA programs hold various types of fundraiser events throughout the year. Highlighted below are fundraiser events from three affiliates:
Chattahoochee CASA (headquartered in Columbus) will have a new fundraiser on April 28th. The Red Shoe Party will include live jazz, great food and a silent auction. The party's theme centers around Dorothy's ruby slippers in The Wizard of Oz and has the slogan "There's No Place Like Home." Attendees are asked to sport their red shoes in celebration of Chattahoochee CASA helping children find permanent homes.

Atlantic Area CASA (headquartered in Hinesville) held its 5th Annual Dancing with the Stars of the Coastal Empire on March 3rd. The event is based on the Dancing with the Stars TV show and features local celebrities who each raise funding to support their participation in the event. 
 
Piedmont CASA (headquartered in Winder) held the 6th annual Heart for Children, Heart for Chocolate event on February 10th with a Roaring 20s theme. Attendees' attire included flapper dresses and headdresses. They enjoyed a catered dinner, live and silent auctions, live music and decadent desserts from local chocolatiers.
 
Congratulations to Enotah CASA (headquartered in Dahlonega) for being recently awarded as the Nonprofit of the Year by the Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce!
 
Coastal Plain CASA (headquartered in Tifton) recently held the 2nd annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Not only was the event to appreciate current CASA volunteers, it also was used to help recruit new CASA volunteers. Board members and CASA volunteers invited others to attend who were interested in becoming CASA volunteers. Overall attendance was around 100 people!


Link between Childhood Education & Health Examined

Please take a moment and click on the link below to read an informative, brief article by Shanta R. Dube of Georgia State University. Research has shown that traumatic events in childhood can affect children as they mature, as well as limit their education. These traumatic experiences often contribute to negative social and behavioral outcomes for these children when they become adults, and can have an effect years and years later in their lives. The advocacy CASA volunteers provide to deprived children can help to lessen the effect of traumatic experiences, as well as break the cycle of deprivation.
