LEARNING BY DESIGN
ASID  is proud to feature the second project in its Impact of Design Series, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. We believe this data will inform the work of designers as they strive to create the optimal human experience.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School, a Brutalist building fraught with challenges, was selected as the prototype school for The Cambridge Green Schools' "Getting to Net Zero Framework," an initiative to change how the Cambridge school district thinks about energy in its buildings.

By definition a  zero-energy building, also known as a zero net energy (ZNE) building, is a building with zero net energy consumption, meaning the total amount of energy used by the building on an annual basis is roughly equal to the amount of renewable energy created on the site, or in other definitions by renewable energy sources elsewhere. These buildings consequently contribute less overall greenhouse gas to the atmosphere than similar non-ZNE buildings.

The design team, led by Perkins Eastman, was tasked to create a high-performing building and a community school that responded to the needs of its neighbors. The project was complicated by the school's small and irregular site; the large and complex program accommodating 740 children from preschool to 8th grade; a robust after-school program; and an array of engaged stakeholders.

San Francisco Decorator Showcase Tours and CSU Fresno Tour
We had a terrific trip May 9 to SF to see the Decorators Showhouse and the Cassanova exhibit with my clients and vendors... incredible sponsorship from Carpet One, Phillips Lighting and Home and Bordonas Oakdale to the tune of $1500.00 each.

Then on to California State University Fresno May 10 for a tour of the campus, an hour long presentation and discussion with the students and a beautiful reception including area ASID members. We've committed to visiting once an academic quarter to continue a fluid relationship and mentoring with our ASID students. Brenda was named to the departments advisory board as she is Fresno State alum and has great experience in design education.

May 16 we traveled to SF with the Sacramento ASID Design contingent... it was a great day and our transportation was generously underwritten by Carpet One, Phillips Lighting and Home and Bordonas Oakdale, also  Blue Star Appliances.. thanks to the connections and work of Jordan Tatosian at PBK Rancho Cordova. PBK also provided a delicious breakfast and champagne for our trip.

We are very fortunate to have had Jordan's support... I'd like to show our appreciation by encouraging our members to shop more frequently at PBK ... thanking him when we are in the shop and make our purchases.
Our SAC designers loved the day and plan to make the trip again next year.
