Tennessee Rock Trail - photo by Patricia Kyritsi Howell
Hike Leaders: Patricia Kyritsi Howell

Hike Location:
Tennessee Rock Trail at Black Rock State Park, Mountain City, GA

Hike Date: Tuesday, July 3rd, 2018

Outing Description: This trail goes through a variety of incredibly diverse plant habitats and features many native and introduced plants with a long history of use as medicine, and many that are still used today.

The trail includes two rather steep but gradual climbs and is shaded. It takes us to a spectacular lookout with views north where we will stop and have lunch or a snack before descending to the parking area. Georgia Park Pass required ($5 per car).

Meeting Time, Place and Directions: Meet at 9:00 am in the Ingles parking lot on Hwy 441 in Clayton, GA. We'll meet in the southwest corner of the parking lot (near the bank and BP gas station). Click here for a Google map.

Distance and Difficulty: This is a 2.2-mile hike on a loop trail with some steep but gradual climbs. Moderate.

Duration:  We will be stopping frequently for botanizing and then to savor the view from atop Black Rock Mountain. We should be back at the trail end by 1:30 or 2:00 pm.

Participant Limit: 15

What to Bring and Wear: Lunch/snacks, plenty of water, rain gear, sturdy footwear. Long pants recommended if you are concerned about poison ivy, as it is a narrow trail. Optional: walking stick, camera, magifying glass/jeweler's loup, field guides if you have some you like. If allergic to bees/wasps, remember to bring your meds/epi-pen.

Cancellation: Hikers will be notified if the outing is cancelled due to forecast of severe weather, etc.

Pet Policy: No pets on this hike, please

Family Safe Policy: Georgia ForestWatch Outings are a smoke-, alcohol-, and drug-free setting.
