Oberlin College President Carmen Twillie Ambar to Deliver C|M|LAW Commencement Address

Oberlin College President Carmen Twillie Ambar will deliver the commencement address at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law's graduation ceremony for the class of 2018. The ceremony will take place Sunday, May 13, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Playhouse Square's Connor Palace Theatre.

President Ambar, who earned her J.D. at Columbia Law School, will also receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Cleveland State University during the ceremony, as will C|M|LAW graduates  Judge Patricia A. Blackmon '75 and Judge Melody J. Stewart '88.
 

"We are honored to have these three  outstanding  leaders in law and higher education as our commencement speaker and honorary degree recipients.  They   have demonstrated outstanding leadership and a commitment to service that   will inspire  our school's graduates as they prepare to make their marks through justice,"  said  Cleveland-Marshall College of Law Dean Lee Fisher .

CMLAA Alumni of the Year Recipient:
Matthew Crawford '94
Matthew Crawford '94 has used his law degree to pursue corporate leadership and has advanced to Director and President of Park-Ohio Holdings Corp.  Crawford will receive the CMLAA Alumni of the Year Award along with  Judge Benita Y. Pearson, '95 on Thursday, May 24.  Judge Pearson will be featured in the next issue of this newsletter.

Civil Litigation Students Win in Eighth District Court of Appeals
After a representation spanning more than two years, Cleveland-Marshall Civil Litigation Clinic students were successful in securing unemployment benefits for their client by obtaining a reversal of a benefit denial from the Eighth District Court of Appeals.


Thomas Published Article in CMBA Bar Journal
Cuyahoga County Deputy Inspector General and 2016 C|M|LAW alumnus Delanté Thomas wrote an article in the March Edition of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Journal on addressing disparities in bar passage rates for Black students.

Prof. Kalir Quoted in New York Times
Professor Doron Kalir was quoted by the New York Times on a recent U.S. Court of Appeals Sixth Circuit decision on employment protection for transgender workers. Professor Kalir, together with Professors Matt Green, Ken Kowalski, and Carolyn Broering-Jacobs, wrote an amicus brief on behalf of Equality Ohio that was cited in the district court's decision.

Professor Chris Sagers was quoted in the New York Times DealBook on the potential for an antitrust case against Amazon and provided an extended response to the question of "Is Amazon Evil?" for Gizmondo.   Sagers also spoke with Bloomberg and Law360 on a pair of big pharma antitrust cases.

Professor Heidi Gorovitz Robertson appeared on  News 5 Cleveland as part of an investigative report on  the Ohio EPA's concerns with Cleveland Water.

Prof. Lewis Appears on News 5 Cleveland


Professor and Associate Dean Milena Sterio was elected Co-Chair of the Women in International Law Interest Group at the American Society of International Law.

In a Global Space Law Center blog entry, Professor Mark Sundahl examined how the recent Tiangong-1 reentry illustrates the need for space law education, including this summer's online space law course.
