Are you confused about the Triduum? Below is an explanation of these holy days.
Today is Holy Thursday, also called Maundy Thursday, and it is the day in which Jesus washed the feet of the Disciples in the upper room and celebrated the Passover Meal that we call the Last Supper. It was during the Last Supper that Christ instituted the Eucharist that we celebrate and consume to this day at Mass. It was also on Holy Thursday that Judas Iscariot betrayed our Lord for a sum of 30 silver denarii to the Temple authorities. Jesus was seized while praying in the Garden of Gethsemane and handed over to the Sanhedrin, a plot with the intention of convicting him.
Good Friday is the day that Jesus was crucified and died. After being seized Jesus underwent many trials and interrogations by both Temple authorities, civil Jewish authorities, and Roman authorities. Jesus was falsely accused of blasphemy and sentenced to die by the hand of the Romans. He underwent a scourging, carried his cross to Golgatha (also called Calvary) along the Via Dolorosa, and was nailed to the cross. It was on this day that he said his famous 7 last sayings and forgave his accusers. After his death Joseph of Arimathea, a Pharisee, buried Jesus in a family tomb guarded by Roman soldiers.
Holy Saturday is the day foretold by Jesus to his Disciples that he would no longer be with them. Jesus has died and was buried leaving the disciples in confusion. They believed the Messiah was to be a great political and military ruler, much like King David in the Old Testament, of whom Jesus is descended. Their Messiah, Jesus, is now dead. Grief and Despair follow as the disciples question what they are to do now.
Easter Sunday is the day that Christ rose from the grave after 3 days of being dead, just as he said he would. Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene and the Disciples telling them of the good news of his resurrection. Easter Sunday is the culmination of Christ's mission and ministry on earth, thus fulfilling the Old Testament prophesies of the promised Messiah and deliverance from the bondage of sin. The drama of Salvation is completed and Jesus Christ reigns supreme!
