Scripture Lesson : Matthew 5:13-15 and  Hebrews 10:24-25
Sermon:  "The Dangers of 'Either - Or'"

This Sunday is Confirmation Sunday. It's the Sunday where we celebrate the work done by these six amazing youth; work that explored what it means to be Christian, a member of a church, a member of a community and a member of God's creation. This is a highly intelligent, wonderfully creative, and deeply engaging group. Some will join the church. Others will not. Some identify themselves as Christian while others self-identify as Agnostics. Some are fairly new to the church while others have been a part of the Aldersgate family since birth. Two were baptized as a part of the Confirmation Retreat at Lazy F two weeks ago. In many ways this group of six represent us, Aldersgate United Methodist Church, with all of our wonderful differences. It has been a privilege, for a really short time, spending time with this group. And I want to thank Jen who designed, taught, supported and loved this group throughout the Confirmation experience.

So this Sunday I want to talk Confirmation, but also talk about the dangers of "either / or" attitudes. If we seek to live in the world of "either / or" we would not celebrate the diversity of this group. If we live "either / or" lives we miss the magnificent middle, no matter whether in faith or politics or life. So this Sunday we'll gather, celebrate the "both / and" of this group, and of our own faith journeys. To prepare please read Matthew 5:13-15 and Hebrews 10: 24-25.

MINISTRY NEWS
CRC Table Talk Cancelled
There will not be a CRC Table Talk on June 9 as planned.   More information will be forthcoming.
New Members
Last Sunday seven people joined Aldersgate as new members. At the first service we welcomed Patrick Eames and Steve Briggs. At the second service we welcomed Pam Johnson, Butch and Sue Black, and Peter Coffee and Carolyn Major. All have been attending regularly and are actively involved with the church. Please give them a warm welcome.
Stewardship Pledge Card
Thank you to those that have submitted their pledge card. If you have not had a chance to turn in yours yet, please do so by this  Sunday. We ask that you prayerfully consider submitting your pledge so the Finance Team can prepare a budget that supports our staff in their guidance of fulfilling our mission. We hope all those who call Aldersgate their church home will give so that we can fully fund all our ministries, grow in service to others and continue to be a place where love overflows.  Please  CLICK HERE  for the pledge card and either mail it or bring it to church at your earliest convenience.
Electronic Giving
Many of you will be going on vacation or visiting family during these upcoming summer months. To keep up to date on your tithe, please consider signing up for automatic recurring electronic giving via the church website at aldersgate-church.org/giving/.   It's fast, it's simple, and it really helps us keep the lights on and programs going during the summer months. Enjoy your trips and we look forward to seeing you when you return!
Common Table ~ Monday June 18
The next Aldersgate Common Table will be on Monday, June 18 and it starts at 7:00pm in Friendship Hall. Come early for dinner at 6:30pm. This gathering is for everyone who wants to stay informed about church business and have a voice in the life of the church. On the agenda is Sabbatical Overview (Pastor Brad), Church Budget (Melinda Lilley) and NAMI (Pastor Laura). Free childcare is available with advance notice.  Please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact the church office if you plan to come to dinner or need childcare.
NO "Stop the Bleed" Class
We are sorry that we cannot have a "Stop the Bleed" class at this time.  No instructor is available, and they are all volunteers.  We will try again to organize a class in the fall.  Thanks to all of you for your interest and we hope to have more success scheduling a class later.
Anaheim Youth Group Overnight
The youth group from Anaheim UMC is coming for an overnight stay June 30 on their way to a service project in Spokane. They will arrive at Aldersgate Saturday and leave Sunday before worship. Anyone interested in providing food for a dinner and/or a breakfast for the youth and their chaperones please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact Pastor Laura.
Summer Kid's Club   June 24 - August 26
Sign up to host a Kid's Club this summer!  Kid's Club is a fellowship time for preschool and elementary age kids that takes place after Children's Time through the end of the Sunday worship service.  You can play games, do a craft project, read a story or play outside on the playground!  This is an important way that the church supports families and welcomes children at Aldersgate.
Please see Jen to sign up for a Sunday to host a Kid's Club this Summer.
Summer Music
We are looking for any type of special music for the second service during the summer from mid-June through August. Voice, piano, small ensembles, bells or brass, all are welcome to share their gifts and talents with the congregation. Contact Hanae Straub at [email protected].
Resource Library News
Aldersgate Poems has been updated to include Bob Olson's latest poems entitled "Wealth" and "Mothers Day 2018 - Jesus Weeps" on pages 162 and 164, respectively.  This volume is displayed on the library mobile cart.

CHURCH & SOCIETY
Crossroads Dinner Update
On the 4th Tuesday of the month Aldersgate serves dinner at the Salvation Army in Bellevue.   We thank everyone who has so generously donated and served food this year. Your time, service and donations are greatly appreciated!
  •  At the May dinner we served 57 men, women and children. The number fed has steadily increased from 40 people last year to 50+ people this year. We served all of the food we brought the last 3 months and we will need to increase the amount if the current trend continues. We are seeing more families and children and many of these people are very hungry. All are very appreciative of our efforts.
  • We are in need of food donations and serving volunteers during the summer months. The upcoming dinners are on June 26, July 24, and August 25. If you can help out with food or serving, please sign up at https://bit.ly/2H1qjPR .
If you have questions or would like to help please contact Melinda Lilley  or Rachel Saw .
Companion Care Givers Needed
There is a United Methodist minister from Wisconsin in treatment at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). She has undergone a bone marrow transplant and will need to be in Seattle until July 31. She needs to be watched by a companion care giver thru the day. No medical or personal care is required, she only asks that companions be alert to any changes and call for help in that case.  She is staying at Pete Gross House at Republican and Minor- near SCCA, and SCCA staff are always available. Three hour shifts most days are available to relieve family and friends who have been taking the major burden in the first half of her stay.  If you can help, please contact Kathy Garner, coordinator at 425-640-2360, [email protected] or Rev. Valerie Fons 920-535-0077 [email protected].
Bellevue City Council Considers Homelessness on the Eastside
Public Hearing June 11
On April 20, the City of Bellevue released its first draft of the proposed amendments to the Land Use Code (LUC). There will be a series of Council meetings this spring and a public hearing is tentatively scheduled on June 11 during which faith community members will have the opportunity to testify about caring for God's children throughout the community. In preparation for that public hearing, please read the attached amendments to the Land Use Code and prayerfully consider your own voice in the public dialogue about homeless Bellevue residents and the proposal to situate a homeless shelter in Bellevue.
Initiative 1631 on Climate Change Information
Tuesday, June 12
The Green Team is sponsoring Earth Ministry  speakers to come to Aldersgate to help us understand Initiative 1631  as it works its way toward ballots in November. It's in the phase of signature gathering and many faith communities are in strong support. Come on June 12 at 7:00pm and learn the role that faith leaders have played all along in drafting the initiative, protecting God's creation, and calling for justice for those most affected by climate change.
