This Saturday, October 26, we're celebrating fall! The Carnival is from 10am - 2pm. There will be a dunking booth (with perhaps the pastor as target?), a Bounce House, Duck Pond, Face Painting, Lawn Games, balloon animals and hotdogs, etc. This really will be fun for all ages so invite a friend...and then invite them to worship with us!

Dunk the Pastor!

Buy tickets to dunk the pastor at the Fall carnival! Each ticket gives you three tries! $2 for 1 ticket or $5 for 3 tickets. Cindy will be in the dunk tank from 11:30am to 12pm. Contact Mallory Halterman at [email protected] for more information.

Celebratory Lunch!

We are fast approaching Celebration Sunday, November 10, when we ask that all pledge cards for 2020 be returned. We anticipate a budget for 2020 in excess of $400,000 so please be in prayer how you may best support Holy Comforter. We will have a lunch for everyone following the service.

Candidates for the next Bishop of Georgia

If you didn't have a chance to meet and hear the five candidates for the next bishop of Georgia, there is one more session that will be live-streamed. OR, you can see the the video from last night's presentation after the last walkabout on Friday. It will be posted on the website for the Diocese of Georgia and on the Facebook page for Episcopal Diocese of Georgia later on Friday. I watched last night and it is well worth your time! - Cynthia Taylor+

BLAST
(Bible Learning Action Stations)

Sunday, October 27: Our K-2 class will visit the Digital Media station by reading along and listening to a beautiful version of Noah's Ark written by Jerry Pinkney and narrated by Dennis Haysbert. Our 3-5 group will visit the Creative Drama station. The kids tell Noah's story as if it were a serial drama, while remembering God's timing is perfect.

Sunday, November 3: We begin our lessons on the 23 rd Psalm. Our K-2 group will visit the art station and learn that they are one of God's sheep. They will make a craft of sheep using everyday materials. Our 3-5 group will learn that God is always with us by visiting the Bible games station and playing a table top game with straws and cotton ball sheep.

Looking for LEMs (Lay Eucharistic Ministers)

Lay Eucharistic Ministers are persons who assist the clergy during the service, particularly in administering Holy Communion, leading prayers, and taking communion to the sick and homebound members of our church. If you have been confirmed in the Episcopal Church, you may serve in this office. If you are interested in serving as a Lay Eucharistic Minister, please contact Court Hooper at [email protected].

Caring for Others-Volunteer Opportunities

The Claiborne: Our volunteers recently completed our first month at The Claiborne! We have established a Book Club, Choir and also volunteer for various daily activities. Volunteering is easy, each month you receive a copy of the Activities Schedule and simply choose the dates and activities you wish to participate in. Questions? Contact Pam Vanscoy at [email protected].

Christmas Cards Update: Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Christmas Cards for inmates at Leath.  There is a container to collect the cards that have been signed with a message in the foyer.  Please return those completed cards in the bag that they were in with the word "complete" written on a piece of paper inside the bag.

Gifts for the Christ Child - 3 Families Remaining

Each year we sponsor several families in need to help make their Christmas brighter for their children. If you are interested in 'adopting' a family, there is a box on the table in the foyer with a list of families and requests of gifts by the children. All requests do not need to be purchased. There are corresponding cards for each family and instructions on the back of the card. We have large bags with tags available to place gifts in.  Please do not wrap gifts. We ask that all gifts be at the Church by November 24th. Questions? Contact Robert Bargeron at [email protected]

Be a Reading Buddy at
Martinez Elementary School

We are able to continue our tutoring/ mentoring program with our new Reading Buddies! Please think about sharing one hour a week to improve the lives of elementary school students. Can't do this every week-ask a buddy to partner with you and come every other week. We are pairing with Martinez Elementary School. Please contact Jeanette James at [email protected] .

Acolyte Training and Movie

Saturday, November 2nd at 1pm we meet at the church for an acolyte training session. All acolytes and parents are encouraged to attend. Following the training, we will watch a movie and have snacks. Questions? Contact Morgan Hooper at [email protected].

Guest Preacher for All Saint's Sunday!

We welcome The Rev. Amy Bradley as our guest preacher on All Saint's Sunday, November 3rd.  Amy is the Associate Rector of our sister church, St. Augustine's, but just as important she is the chaplain for The Canterbury Club at Augusta University.  She shares the Episcopal ministry with the students there, whether they are part of our denomination or not.

All Saint's Sunday Remembrance

On Sunday November 3 we will be remembering all the saints of Holy Comforter who are now in the full presence of God as well as others who have died this past year who are close to our heart.

Children and Ministry at The Claiborne

The parenting class had a very meaningful time engaging with residents of The Claiborne last month and wish to extend the invitation to other church families. Finding appropriate places to serve our community along side our children can be challenging but rewarding. This is a lovely environment and we were met with great enthusiasm by residents as they were finishing their Sunday lunch. We are invited back for the first Sunday in November and December. A short orientation and explanation of our activity of the day is given immediately following our church service while the children have a packed lunch. We then proceed to The Claiborne from 12:15-1:15 to share an activity with small groups of residents. If you have questions or are able to attend either November 3 or December 1, contact Cheryl Spessert @ [email protected] .

African Team Ministries -  November 10th and 17th

(in the church foyer)

African Team Ministries is a Christian ministry working as an intermediary between African and American churches. With help from Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, and Anglican denominations, this provides funding for orphan and refugee relief missions and evangelism in East Africa.

The support received is sent directly to partnering Bishops to provide school fees, tuition, books, and uniforms. This support ensures that the children receive an education and a measure of stability needed to rebuild their minds. Currently there are children registered for sponsorship in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Our Next Book Club Meeting

Dr. Mason is internationally recognized for his work on peace and reconciliation. And if you are interested in the pilgrimage, pick up one of the brochures in the foyer. The trip is March 17-24. Questions? Contact Dr. Taylor at [email protected].

CREATION CARE

Part of creation care is caring for ALL of creation. Messaging around creation care is often about environmental factors like clean air and water or land protection. Don't get me wrong, all of those things are important and they all circle back around how the people that God created and love interact with the environment - do they have clean air and water and safe working conditions? Chocolate is one of the foods that has major problems with proper labor practices in terms of providing farmers with a living wage and child or slave labor. Many of us are busy selecting treats as a way to show love and hospitality to our neighbors during the upcoming Halloween and Christmas holidays. While planning for these holidays, also think of ways that you can show love for the workers in the cacao farming industry by being a conscious consumer. Consider a non-chocolate candy to pass out or select fair trade product. Products that are fair trade certified ensure that workers are being paid a living wage and that the supply chain is free of child and slave labor. When purchasing your holiday treats for eating or for baking, look for the certifications like Fair Trade certified to ensure that you're caring for all the people that participated in growing and producing that product. There are many common brands that participate in Fair Trade certification. Check out the brands at the links below!

Creator God, Help us to see and love our neighbors, even when they live oceans away or when our actions feel small. Help us to live more mindfully in this world knowing that our choices don't occur in a vacuum. I pray that we would all make choices that make this imperfect world a better place. Amen
