Engage the United Nations
The Temple of Understanding is excited to welcome our 2018 interns -- a dynamic group of students from around the world! 


The interns have created a supportive, tight-knit community for themselves. In less than two weeks, the group has already attended UN Meetings on topics ranging from counterterrorism to universal health care to human rights, and they have paid visits to sights including the German Mission and the Won Buddhist Temple. 

The spirited nature of this group will serve it well during the upcoming High Level Political Forum, when six of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals will be under review and the UN grounds will be brimming with diplomats, foreign leaders, business innovators, policy experts, and others from around the world. Standing Against the
Muslim Travel Ban
Reach Out, Speak Out, March, Vote

The Temple of Understanding joins colleagues in horror over the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the travel ban targeting Muslims. This is so outrageous that we all need to voice our objection to the court's blatant Islamophobia. We agree with dissenting Justice Sonia Sotomayor that this is " motivated by hostility and animus toward the Muslim faith."

Oppose Family Separation
Faith Communities Stand Up for Immigrant Families


Join  Bishop Minerva Carcaño of the United Methodist Church  in signing this petition condemning family separation at the border, prolonged detention, and the cruel and inhumane treatment of immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers:

"As faith communities, we ask the administration to support policies that protect and unite immigrants and families, and to terminate the family separation and 'zero tolerance' policies that result in detention and prosecution of individuals for migration-related offenses. We call on the administration to respect international and U.S. law and ensure asylum seekers have an opportunity to seek protection...  Congress should reject any anti-immigrant, anti-family legislation... or any other proposal that violates the sanctity of family unity. "

Puerto Rico's Debt Crisis Is a Human Rights Issue

Puerto Rico is crippled by debt, some of which is illegal, and all of which needs to be transparent in its sources, expenses, and uses. 

Organizers of the Citizens' Debt Audit write that similar audits "have been conducted in over 18 countries, including Brazil, France and Argentina, and these audits have produced concrete results without government participation."  Their brochure lists irregularities and illegalities including violations of the constitution, conflict of interest, excessive profiting, false representation, omission of risk factors and lack of legal authorization.

The video on their website is powerfully inspiring, with diverse citizens calling for debt audit NOW. 

The debt crisis, which includes "harsh austerity measures to ensure payment for a legally dubious public debt", is a human rights issue, as is the environmental pollution, exploitation and privatization.
