The Center for Service and Social Action is pleased to announce the launch of the JCU Lobo Learning Lab this week!
The Lobo Learning Lab is an after-school virtual hub for learning adventures & creative engagement for students in grades K-12! The Lobo Learning Lab is a space for children to experience exciting virtual after-school programming at no cost. JCU students develop and lead activities each week to keep children engaged and connected.
Goal: With the challenges presented by COVID-19, so many schools and community partners are working remotely and unable to engage students in the normal face-to-face way. The CSSA Team has been working to respond to the needs of our community partners as part of our academic service-learning outreach. In order to be nimble, find a creative way forward, and provide valuable learning activities, CSSA created this dynamic after-school virtual program! Our goal is to engage our JCU students in finding meaning and purpose, and connect them to our community partners and children across the city.

Advocate: Learn from the National
Coalition for the Homeless
|
|
Learn how you can advocate for and help end homelessness through the National Coalition for the Homeless.
You can help end homelessness by simple CAREing:
Advocacy is critical to creating the systemic changes needed to end homelessness. Advocacy means working with people experiencing homelessness to bring about positive changes in policies and programs on the local, state, and federal levels. It means working with various sectors of the community (e.g. city/county officials, members of Congress, direct service providers, and the business community) to develop workable strategies for responding to homelessness. It also means changing your language and behaviors in small ways that may contribute to larger changes in the way people experiencing homelessness are seen and treated in our society. Learn how to be an advocate here.

Become a Refugee Response Youth Mentor
|
|
The goal of the Youth Mentoring Program with The Refugee Response is to connect refugee students with volunteer mentors in order to help students: achieve their own academic, language and social-emotional goals, nurture a growth mindset, and build confidence in their skills, abilities and identities. Youth mentors are academic tutors, role models and friendly community connections. The Refugee Response believes these connections significantly bolster student development. The relationships between students and mentors not only result in increased confidence in English language skills but also increased comfort in new communities.

Our #MyMagisMessage for the week comes from CSSA Student Leadership Team member, Reilly Haas, a junior Sports Administration and Business major from Cincinnati, OH! Reilly has served with Hope Alliance Church, LMM Men's Shelter Current Events, St. Francis Elementary School.
If you had to state your life mission off the top of your head, in one sentence, what would it be?
My life mission is to live like you have nothing to lose, work as if you have something to prove, and love one another until the end.
#MyMagisMessage
When I reflect on what magis means, my mind thinks about leaving the world better than you found it. Each one of us has our own unique blueprint of strengths and weaknesses. The diverse set of talents we each possess can be used to make a difference in our world. I work on living out the magis by performing small acts of kindness, especially when it's challenging.
Like many of you, this year started out in an unexpected way. Embracing these different circumstances has helped me work at becoming a better version of myself. Since August, I have been assistant coaching high school cross country. This type of service has been challenging but also extremely rewarding. As a coach, I've discovered the importance of pushing people to do their best while also creating a welcoming environment that fosters growth. This type of service places an emphasis on doing service for and with others. Teaching the girls how to become better runners though technique or skills has been enjoyable, but it has not been the most rewarding part. What I'll cherish most is the relationships I've developed with each girl. Learning about who each girl is and pushing them to become the best version of themselves has been the most rewarding part.
No two people are the same. The differences we all possess can be used to make a difference, big or small; we just have to believe it. Service helps me leave the world better than I found it and pushes me to become the best version of myself!
