Overcoming Barriers 
to Variable Color Inkjet Printing
Recently, Document Data Solutions (DDS) supplied a "Top-10" high-volume direct mail service provider with HP C800 color print modules together with a DDS-developed print controller and bulk ink delivery system. The customer had originally intended to augment their analog presses with a CMYK process color inkjet solution from another well-known supplier. This supplier's equipment design was configured with four individual single-color (C,M,Y,K) inkjet print heads, which required the heads to be installed over an 8 to 10 foot span on an inkjet tower. As you might imagine, achieving satisfactory registration and consistency was a struggle with this design.
 
The DDS solution featured HP CMYK color inkjet modules with all four colors in a small (less than 8") enclosure. This allowed the customer to mount the color inkjet modules in more advantageous positions on their presses and made consistent color print registration simple. The customer added high quality HP C800 color inkjet capability to several offset web presses.
 
Besides direct mail applications, service providers can also add variable color elements to transactional documents. Variable color inkjet images and text on bills and statements increases their value and usefulness. Organizations use variable color on transactional documents to call attention to important data items like due dates and amounts, or to promote upgrades, renewals, or events.
 
With DDS equipment and software, companies can meet customer demands for enhanced personalized one-to-one communications, while still leveraging their current investments and workflows based on offset presses and monochrome inkjet systems. Variable color inkjet imaging can be applied to customer materials with a single production touch point.
