University of Miami to Develop COVID-19 Rapid Diagnostic Test in Collaboration with Heat Biologics

Biomedical researchers at the
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine are developing a
COVID-19 point-of-care diagnostic test in collaboration with biopharmaceutical company Heat Biologics, Inc. The new, patient-friendly test will require a simple pharyngeal throat swab to deliver on-the-spot results on a paper strip in under 30 minutes. In contrast, current tests for COVID-19 usually rely on the use of expensive thermal-cyclers, with results in five to six hours, or require blood draws to detect antibodies, indicative of previous exposure. Preliminary research suggests the new test is specific to the novel coronavirus, with no cross-reaction to previous coronavirus subtypes. The test is designed to enable cost-effective manufacturing amenable for mass production and deployment around the world.

Broward Health Foundation Asks for Donations and Medical Supplies
|
Fort Lauderdale, Florida --
Broward Health Foundation has launched a COVID-19 Relief Fund to help provide necessary medical supplies and personal protection equipment (PPE) for the safety and well-being of frontline Broward Health caregivers and patients.
The Foundation is specifically asking for N95 and surgical masks, face shields, gloves and isolation gowns. The Foundation is also requesting iPads so patients can communicate with loved ones. Monetary and supply donations to the COVID-19 Relief Fund will help provide personal protective equipment to caregivers, and support emerging COVID-19 needs.
"Our caregivers have a passion for caring," said
Bill Diggs, president, Broward Health Foundation, "and now we're asking the public to show their passion for caring for them. During this global health crisis, we need our community to help us secure the medical supplies that caregivers need to safely care for patients suffering from COVID-19. Jupiter Medical Center Establishes Command Center to Bolster COVID-19 Preparedness

JUPITER, FL - Since January,
Jupiter Medical Center's medical staff leadership, infection prevention experts and executive team have been developing plans to screen, isolate and treat COVID-19 patients, including conducting drills and training for hospital team members and ensuring the careful stewardship of equipment and supplies. The medical center was one of the first hospitals to implement
CDC guidelines for the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of COVID-19 and since has also been working closely with the
Florida Department of Health to strictly adhere to state and federal guidelines.
To streamline and centralize hospital operations in order to address an expected increase in patient volume of COVID-19 patients, Jupiter Medical Center has established an Incident Command Center. Similar to the actions the regional medical center would take during a hurricane, the command center offers a dedicated structure to streamline communication and provide administrative oversight to manage patient treatment, clinical staffing, and the allocation of rooms, equipment and supplies.
