Uplifting Voices: Sharing Methods of Community Restoration and Engagement

With inhabitants from more than 140 countries speaking 224 languages, Los Angeles bolsters a remarkably diverse population. Promoting peace and prosperity between our city’s diverse communities is essential in ensuring the engagement, empowerment, and security of Angelenos.
Last month, IVCLA welcomed emerging leaders from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on a program about “Peace and Conflict Resolution in Ethnic Groups.” As the DRC continues to emerge from a civil war, these individuals play a critical role as champions of peace in their home communities. We were honored to arrange a program for these visitors to meet with peacemakers in the Los Angeles area and engage in discussion, exchange best practices and lay the foundation for future collaborations.

On the 4th of July, IVCLA Young Professionals enjoyed a picnic under the fireworks with emerging leaders from the Philippines who traveled to Los Angeles on a program addressing drug use, addiction and methods to improve rehabilitation services. The group shared conversation, food and 4th of July traditions at the beautiful Grand Park in Downtown L.A. while listening to live music and soaking up the sun! Enjoy the photos!

What are the Social Consequences of Racist Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric?

What effect does increasingly racist and negative rhetoric have on targeted minorities? What are the long-term social consequences of this rhetoric? Director for the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at UCLA School of Medicine David Hayes-Bautista, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Dean Hansell, and UCLA psychologist Patricia Greenfield will discuss the social costs of the racist rhetoric that surrounds us.
