Welcome to the Spring 2018 issue of the California Marine Protected Areas Education and Outreach Newsletter!
In this issue, you will find updates on MPA related projects as well as a variety of events and opportunities for getting involved in the coming months.

In coordination with CDFW and OPC, CMSF is compiling a library of all existing MPA
outreach resources and materials produced by
CDFW, other agencies and organizations, and MPA Collaboratives. While a variety of MPA outreach products and programs have proven effective in CA, these resources are not aggregated in a manner that optimizes distribution and makes materials readily-available
to partners statewide.
If your organization has created any MPA materials please send them to [email protected] for inclusion.
Products should be specific to MPA outreach and education and can include physical things (brochures, posters, signs, videos, etc.) as well as program descriptions and curriculum. Feel free to pass on any contacts for partners who have resources that should be included.

CDFW Announces New MPA Outreach Materials
|
|
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has developed several exciting new tools to help educate the public about the California MPA Network. The materials include a short film, an interpretive brochure, and a poster.
Additionally, the department has created a document for ocean educators with several over-arching messages about California's marine and estuarine environments. Descriptions of the materials are below.

New MPA Film from CDFW
This video provides a great overview of the California Marine Protect
ed Area (MPA) Network: what MPAs are, the resources they protect, and the people involved in managing them. The video includes beautiful topside as well as undersea footage, and explains why the California MPA Network is an international model for ocean conservation.
MPA Network Brochure
The California MPA Network brochure helps explain what Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are, how California's MPAs work together as a network, the resources they protect, and the science underway to measure their success. The brochure includes a beautiful fold-out illustration featuring species and habitats likely to benefit from MPAs. Folds down to 3.5" x 8.5".
MPA Habitats/ Species Poster
The MPA habitats and species poster helps illustrate the incredible undersea wildlife found throughout California's MPAs. Featuring six habitat-types, the illustration includes over fifty species likely to benefit from MPAs. The reverse side includes a description of the MPA Network as well as a key for identifying species. Poster size is 25" x 32".
Marine and Estuarine Messages
CDFW's Marine and Estuarine Messages convey information for ocean educators about the cultural and natural history of California's coastal resources, ongoing management considerations, and solutions to some of the most vexing problems facing marine and estuarine ecosystems today.

MPA Collaborative Network News
|
MPA Collaborative Network Projects Underway
Each of the fourteen chapters, or Collaboratives, of the MPA Collaborative Network have received a grant through the Ocean Protection Council's Marine Protected Area Collaborative Network Small Grants Program. Collaboratives will continue working on projects throughout 2018, including MPA teacher and docent toolkits, field trainings, videos, brochures, and more. Most Collaboratives have formed working groups or subcommittees to accomplish each task.

MPA Watch Expands to the North Coast
|
WILDCOAST's MPA Watch Coordinator, Angela Kemsley
traveled to the far reaches of northern California to expand the state-wide MPA Watch program. Angela met with the Marine Biologist for the Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation in Smith River to set up two new MPA Watch sites - including one site that runs right into the California-Oregon border!
Now with these new implementations, California's MPA Watch Program runs border to border - from Mexico to Oregon - and covers every coastal county in California.
MPA Watch relies on the power of local partnerships to engage communities in the collection of data to create a snapshot of how people are using coastal and marine resources inside and outside of MPAs in California.

Reef Check CA Launches Climate Change Project
|
Reef Check has been tracking the health of kelp forest ecosystems along the California coast for over a decade now as part of the state's MPA monitoring program. Inside MPAs where human impacts such as fishing are restricted, it is possible to assess the ecological effects of climate change in the absence of other human impacts and on a relatively small scale so that we can improve our understanding of how local conservation measures can mitigate global climate change.
In 2017, Reef Check California began collaborating with Dr. Kristy Kroeker's Lab at the University of California Santa Cruz and researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) to study climate change at locations and scales that are relevant to California's nearshore rocky reefs and kelp forests. Reefcheck has installedinstruments that will measure temperature, ocean pH and dissolved oxygen at Reef Check sites ranging from Mendocino County to southern California.

MPA Watch and AEOE Creating MPA Curriculum, Resources and Activities for Kids

MPA Watch is proud to partner with the California Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (AEOE) to introduce marine protected area curriculum, resources, and activities to informal learning centers and outdoor schools throughout California!
Over the next year, MPA Watch and their partners at AEOE will be creating a series
of lessons and activities for educators and naturalists at aquariums, nature centers, outdoor schools and other informal or non-formal centers to teach field trip students about MPAs, marine science, adaptive management, coastal stewardship and more through immersive hands-on activities such as MPA Watch for outdoor and environmental education!
If you work at an informal learning center or outdoor school and are interested in incorporating MPA-based lessons and activities there are some great opportunities coming up this year including:
- On April 27, 2018 MPA Watch and AEOE will be hosting a professional development workshop introducing some of the new lessons and activities being created as part of this project. Training will take from 2:30pm-5:00pm at the Point Dume State Marine Reserve in Malibu. To reserve free tickets visit this link.

Laguna Bluebelt Photo Contest (3/6-4/6)

Waves and Wildlife Photo Contest

Each year,
Save Our Shores
encourages amateur photographers to submit their best shots from state MPAs along the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to our Waves and Wildlife competition. The best images are then displayed in a month-long exhibit at the Sanctuary Exploration Center.

Volunteer at Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park

Begins in April
If you love lighthouses, the ocean, and the beautiful San Mateo coast? Then you'll love serving as a volunteer at Pigeon Point Light Station. Each year, Pigeon Point receives over 200,000 visitors from around the world at this historically rich site. This is your opportunity to join our team of dedicated volunteers who share knowledge with visitors from around the world, help visitors spot whales and other marine wildlife, interpret our local maritime history, and operate the park store and visitor center. Reef Check California Survey Protocol Training Course
Reef Check California has released its survey protocol training course schedule. In addition to teaching direct survey methods, the training program will address safe diving practices, techniques of research diving, sampling design and theory, general marine ecology including species identification and interactions, and the importance of monitoring to meet marine management needs. Trainings include a combination of classroom and field sessions and are held all throughout the state. For more information and/or to sign up please visit this link.
Snapshot CalCoast 2018: June 13-20
Dust off your rubber boots. Dig out your Chacos or Tevas. Grab a tide table and a friend. Get your cameras and smartphones ready!
Snapshot Cal Coast is a California statewide effort to document our coastal biodiversity and hold a series of bioblitzes up and down the California Coast, focusing on intertidal zones in marine protected areas (MPAs).
Over the week of June13th-20th, get out the coast, search for as many plants and animals as you can find, and share photos of your discoveries on the website and app
iNaturalist.

Stroll over sand dunes, enjoy beautiful ocean views, and gain a unique opportunity to view a large colony of Northern elephant seals on this 3-mile, 2.5-hour self-guided trail! Layered clothing, closed-toes shoes, and rain/wind gear are strongly advised. Umbrellas and strollers are not permitted inside the dune area. Pets are not allowed in the park. Point Lobos Underwater Parks Day
Saturday, April 28- 10am-3pm (specimen showing from 10-12)
Visit Point Lobos State Natural Reserve in Carmel on Saturday, April 28 to celebrate California's coastal treasures. Visitors can learn about the importance of California's MPAs, get a closer look at some of the life living beneath the sea and visit exhibit booths from community partners.
