NextEra Energy has proposed a 200 megawatt solar energy center for a 1,600 acre area 30 miles East of Reno/Sparks.
The Dodge Flat Solar project will have 1,200 acres of photovoltaic solar fields and a 200 megawatt energy storage system, which would make it the largest facility of its kind in the United States, according to NextEra Energy.
NextEra is the world's largest generator of wind and solar energy. At full build, it would be capable of producing enough electricity to power about 50,000 homes.
County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to move the project forward.
"This is a great project."
"This is just the direction that not only our commission but (also) the Governor has tried to push the state in terms of having more renewables," county commissioner Vaughn Hartung said.
