What is Earth Day?
This observance arose from an interest in gathering national support for environmental issues. “Earth Day” aims to inspire awareness and appreciation for Earth's environment.
In 1970, San Francisco activist John McConnell and Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson separately asked Americans to join in a grassroots demonstration. McConnell chose the spring equinox (March 21, 1970) and Nelson chose April 22. Millions of people participated, and today, Earth Day continues to be widely celebrated mostly on April 22.
Symbols used by people to describe Earth Day include an image or drawing of planet earth, a tree, a flower, leaves, or the recycling symbol. Colors used for Earth Day include natural colors such as green, brown, or blue.
Even though Earth Day continues to be celebrated mostly on April 22, the official symbol of Earth Day was designed by John McConnell who chose March 21 as his date, it has been described as a “
flag for all people
.” It features a two-sided dye printed image of the Earth from space on a dark blue field, made from recyclable, weather-resistant polyester.
Some ideas and activities to inspire you on Earth Day:
- Plant wildflowers!
- Go native! Plants thrive when they’re natural to your area.
- Bring nature into the garden with plants that attract butterflies and plants that attract hummingbirds and honey bees!
- Clean up your community by organizing a group to pick up litter in a local park or roadway.
- Talk to your local government about planting more trees and native garden beds in public spaces, or consider planting your own on your property!
