IvyNotes: The week of April 23rd
A weekly look ahead with dates and event details to help keep you informed.

A Note from Susan Holt

We're thrilled with our new plant boxes, built this spring in the Post High School backyard. Our students planted lavender, fruits, and vegetables - all products they will use in their cooking classes and when making soap.

Our thanks to SchoolTalk for hosting D.C. Voices of Change, a leadership peer networking event on Friday. Ivymount s tudent leaders attended "Who Am I" workshops, presented a PowerPoint, and led an activity for other students from DCPS and charter schools. Here are two photos from the day:

Over the past two weeks we have tested 83 of our DC and MD students in grades that the state mandated PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) testing. Additional state testing protocols are scheduled throughout the rest of April and May. While the past two weeks were hectic, students were very cooperative and testing went smoothly. Testing affects everyone, so a big shout-out to parents, students, and our dedicated staff for making this a success!

Last week, students from our MLN and Autism programs were honored at a volunteer appreciation luncheon, hosted by The Village,  a retirement community in Rockville, and one of Ivymount's community job sites.

Our PTA is hard at work organizing many projects including the annual Staff Appreciation lunch. We had a great turnout at Friday's meeting - many helpful suggestions were discussed.

Starting this week, we will send school flyers home in backpacks on Thursdays. Please make sure to check for information each Thursday. We hope this weekly routine will help keep everyone organized and in the know.

A big thank you to Washington Hebrew Congregation for sending us a wonderful group of volunteers for Mitzvah Day again this year. Today marked the 20th year they have joined us!

Finally, we want to share a few of the ways we helped celebrate Earth Day on campus. Our MLN high school students learned about the importance of recycling, what items to recycle, and made bird feeders from recycled materials. They studied how much trash their lunch produces and also what happens to trash. Students also learned how to make paper, played Earth Day Bingo, competed in Recycling Relays, and planted seedlings. Check out our Earth Day photo collage below.

Have a great week,
Susan Holt, Director
Ivymount School & Programs
