Updates From Virginia SBDC at Longwood University
From VEDP: Personal Protective Equipment Donations Needed to Support Healthcare Providers Responding to COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in dramatic increases in demand for critical medical supplies, in particular, personal protective equipment (PPE, such as N95 respirators or latex gloves). Due to this big increase in demand plus supply constraints of producers of those products, our hospitals in Virginia are facing the prospect of shortages that could impact healthcare delivery. VEDP is reaching out to Virginia employers who may be able to donate and/or retool to produce these critically needed items. Top priorities at the present time are surgical masks, N95 respirators, disposable medical gowns, latex gloves, ventilators, face shields, and COVID-19 test strips / test kits. If you are aware of a company that may be able to contribute to Virginia’s COVID-19 response by donating (or retooling to produce, if applicable) one or more of these items, please let VGR know or connect them directly to Stacie Neal, Branch Chief of the Planning Division at the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM), who will coordinate logistics. Stacie can be reached at:
stacie.neal@vdem.virginia.gov  or 804-219-6359 (mobile); please also copy  private.sector@vdem.virginia.gov when emailing Stacie.
Layoff Aversion Mini-grants For Small Businesses
The Crater Regional Workforce Development Board (CRWDB) - Local Workforce Development Area (LWDA) 15 has received funding to provide layoff aversion assistance to local small businesses during the COVID-19. The Governor authorized Rapid Response funding, through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), for employers eligible to remain open during this emergency. Layoff aversion strategies and activities are designed to prevent, or minimize the duration of, unemployment resulting from layoffs.  The CRWDB Region will offer mini grants, ranging from $2000 to $6000, to address COVID-19-related effects on small businesses and workers in the nine localities within Crater Region.  Funds may be used to clean facilities and support emergency needs to include, but not limited to, the purchase of software/programs that the employee would need to use from home to support their work and/or remote access supplies, including laptop computers and/or smart phones, which the employee would need to use from home to support their work.

For more information or if a business would like to obtain an application to apply for funds: email Sophenia H. Pierce, CRWDB Executive Director at: spierce@petersburg-va.org or call: 804-894-2529 (cell).
