Dr. Ray Mitchell starts the Match Day countdown.

 Match Day Frenzy!
Letter from the Board Chair
Dear Medical Alumni Board Members,

I'm looking forward to our June Meeting and wanted to give an update on two items. Our newly minted Medical Graduate-Alumni Mentor Program, CURA (Connecting and Uniting Residents and Alumni) finished marketing plans before MATCH DAY held on March 16, 2018. Sign-ups for graduates were available right after the MATCH and marketing emails will be sent separately to M'18 graduates and Medical Alumni to encourage them to sign up to be Mentors. Details of the MATCH will be given at our meeting.

I was also asked to describe The Learning Societies which have been in existence since 2014 with an increase in the organization since 2016. Each incoming freshman is assigned to one of five Societies named for those excellent teachers upon whose shoulders we stand: Drs. Harvey, Hufnagel, Knowlan, Rose and Stewart. It is mentor-rich and student-run. The emphasis is learning professionalism, mindfulness, resiliency and leadership from fellow students, pre-clinical and clinical professors and alumni. Community service projects are planned by the students and there is lively competition among the Societies to obtain points for participating in activities with a Cup (donated by Dr. Marissa McDonnell that has more than a passing resemblance to the Stanley Cup) awarded at the end of each year. New Faculty members can be added once per year and have been completed for the Class of 2022.

Separate from the Learning Societies is an initiative begun this Spring by two M1s to solicit mentors that are also first generation College Graduates to meet informally with 2-4 students once per Month. If you are a first generation College Graduate and interested in this, please let me know and I'll provide the relevant information.

CURA: Connecting and Uniting

After MATCH, comes........ CURA!

The CURA  (Connecting & Uniting Residents & Alumni) program pairs graduating 4th year students with alumni who live in that student's new residency location. CURA (formerly known as MATCH) was founded in 2005 with the goal of helping our newest alumni stay connected and creating a smooth transition from medical school to residencies across the nation.   Sign up by May 4!

Alumni Updates
Kevin Camphausen, M.D.

The  American Society for Radiation Oncology recently selected Kevin for the  ASTRO Fellowship Award, given to those physicians who have made significant contributions to the field of radiation oncology in the areas of research, education, patient care, service and leadership. There have been only 292 ASTRO award recipients among the more than 10,000 members worldwide.

In addition, Kevin was presented with the Purdue University Outstanding Science Alumnus Award last fall. He received a BS in Biology from Purdue in 1988.

Joe Panarelli, M.D.

As the Chair of the MAB Philanthropy Committee, Joe takes an active role in supporting this mission. His current efforts involve the creation of an endowed scholarship honoring the memory of Dr. Joseph B. Walsh (C'62, M'66), who was Professor and Chair of the Ophthalmology Department of both New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (NYEE) and New York Medical College for 25 years. He was known as a tireless teacher and advocate for residents and fellows and a loyal son of Georgetown.

To honor the legacy of this extraordinary member of the Georgetown and NYEE medical communities,
Joe is helping to raise $100,000 for the Dr. Joseph B. Walsh Memorial Endowed Scholarship
by hosting a reception for young alums in the NYC area later this spring. All MAB members are invited to the Panarelli residence on May 4 to support this worthy endeavor -  click here to request  more information.

Joe was also recently featured in a  CBS television news report  in the New York area, focusing on a newly developed FDA-approved device to treat glaucoma.

Please send your personal and professional updates to rippclark@gmail.com.
We are always interested in how our medical alumni are doing!
