October is Here - Time for Lights on Afterschool!

The ND Afterschool Network is launching a statewide awareness campaign this October to showcase how afterschool inspires learning, keeps kids safe, and supports working parents. Watch for billboards with the image above in 18 communities across ND, as well as program highlights on local radio, television, print, and social media. This campaign is part of our Lights on Afterschool celebration! Want to be a part of the campaign in your community? When you find the billboard in your community, post a picture on facebook and tag the @North Dakota Afterschool Network!
Join the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. Organized by the Afterschool Alliance, Lights on Afterschool is a great opportunity to make sure parents, policymakers, and communities understand the impact of afterschool programs in keeping kids safe, inspiring them to learn, and giving families peace of mind.

Seeking Engaging Presenters for the 2020 ND Out-of-School Time Summer Conference!
July 28-29, 2020
Holiday Inn, Fargo
This annual conference brings together youth programs, schools, and community partners to connect, learn new ideas, access valuable resources, and transform learning beyond the school day in North Dakota. This 2-day learning opportunity is open to any teachers, program directors, coordinators, leaders, and staff working in before school, after school, summer and weekend programming for students PreK-12. Attracts approximately 150-175 attendees.

ND Afterschool Mapping Database
|
|
The ND Afterschool Database will be launching by the end of October! Thanks to your help, we've had 92 entries from out-of-school time providers to help map afterschool across the state.
A complete database will help families, schools, communities and elected officials locate afterschool and summer learning programs and identify assets and gaps in out-of-school time programming throughout North Dakota.
The afterschool field in North Dakota is segmented due to funding streams, gaps in policy, and lack of awareness of the immense benefits of high-quality out-of-school time programs to students & families.

We'll continue to randomly draw entries into the mapping database for fun prizes over the next few months!

Federal 21CCLC Updates
On September 12, the Senate Appropriations Committee voted along party lines to freeze funding of the Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill at the current fiscal year 2019 level for FY 2020. In the posted bill, 21st Century Community Learning Center funding for afterschool and summer learning programs was frozen at last year's level of $1.222 billion.

Afterschool Grant Opportunities:
CLIFF BAR FAMILY FOUNDATION
Grants are awarded for general organizational support & for specific projects, supporting funding for environment, healthy food systems, increasing outdoor activity, and building stronger communities.
Applications reviewed
three times per year; next deadline October 11, 2019.
WELLS FARGO FOUNDATION
Grant funding provided in communities across ND in areas such as affordable childcare and before/after school programs.
Applications accepted through October 31, 2019.
GIRLS WHO CODE
The ND Afterschool Network is now a statewide partner with
Girls Who Code, which offers FREE afterschool programming for girls in grades 3-5th and 6-12th, including grant funds to use on supplies, snacks, field trips, and other costs, and coding curriculum provided at no cost. Start a club now!
EDUPORIUM TECHNOLOGY GRANTS
Eduporium is awarding $500 grants to a school or teacher that wants to increase STEM technology. Ideal candidates are educators who have demonstrated innovation and creativity within their school or afterschool community, those who have a financial need, & those who can provide a clear & concise product plan that can be implemented within six months.
Application form is due on the 20th of each month.
ANNIE'S GRANTS FOR GARDENS
Public & private schools and 501c3 non-profit organizations supporting a garden at a public or private school are eligible to apply for funding to support an edible school garden (fruits, vegetables, herbs, grains, etc.) to which children have regular access.
Application period open 8/1/2019 to 11/1/2019 with funding notification January 2020.
OTTERTAIL POWER COMPANY
Funding available in communities served by Ottertail Power to support young minds, invest in current & future workforce, create vibrant culture & community, improve health & human services, and protect natural resources.
Applications reviewed quarterly with next deadline Dec. 15.
WALMART COMMUNITY GRANT PROGRAM
Grant funds from $250 to $5,000 are available to organizations located within the community of each Walmart location. 2019 grant cycle begins February 15, 2019 and
applications accepted through December 31, 2019.

Restorative Practices Training

Establishing a Circle Practice in the Classroom is a simple yet carefully constructed communication process that helps foster a caring & respectful classroom culture. It is a powerful tool to build empathy, emotional literacy, self-regulation, and self-awareness skills. Applicable for programs working with elementary, middle and high school age students.

Lights on Afterschool

Join afterschool programs across the nation for the 20th annual Lights on Afterschool to shine a light on afterschool and the positive effects it has in communities.

Afterschool Quality Coaching Book Study
October 16 - November 20
Online meetings each Wednesday from 1-2pm
This virtual course is your how-to toolkit for building & sustaining a coaching practice that helps supervisors in afterschool settings how to coach their staff to continually improve the quality of their program. Training time is 12 total hours (6 hours instructor-facilitated discussions and 6 hours reading & homework assignments. Participants will receive 2 publications with their $50 registration fee- Get some GUTS, Coach by Jill Jackson ($14.95 value) and How to Coach Teachers to Teach (Almost) Anything ($95 value).

State Advocacy Institute on Youth Homelessness

ND Department of Public Instruction has contracted with SchoolHouse Connection to provide the
State Advocacy Institute on Youth Homelessness. Prior to the Institute, a needs assessment will be conducted in the area of youth homelessness. If your afterschool program works with youth who are homeless, please share the survey link. Youth taking the survey can receive a $10 gift certificate by contacting
Patricia Julianelle, as well as stipends for youth to attend the Institute.
Trauma Sensitive Schools Training of Trainers
October 29-30 | Hazelton
This curriculum is a composition of five modules related to trauma; how trauma manifests in the classroom; the neurobiology of trauma & resilience; effective strategies to assist students experiencing the effects of trauma; understanding secondary effects of trauma; and creating a trauma-informed school culture.
