I stepped into a puddle this morning.
Boy, did it feel good.
A throwback to my childhood.
Yes, I too was young once.
No more do I cry for you,
because you are resting peacefully,
dead in the clouds.
Yesterday was so long ago that I forgot to try.
I sometimes sit Indian style
outside of the drugstore, meditating,
with a bottle of water
and a pack of smokes,
dreaming my dreams of evermore.
We are saddened to report that John Hutchens died earlier this week. May his soul rest in peace.

FROM THE DEAN
It is so hard to hold loss alone. One loss brings up memories of other losses. One loss can stir questions about meaning and identity. One loss can make us angry, fearful, or anxious. But when that loss is held in community, it can be made bearable. Sometimes, it becomes more than just bearable; it becomes the gateway into a measure of healing and a stronger capacity to love.
This photo shows a beautiful altar cloth made by members of the MANNA community and the Sunday morning congregation. It is the outward sign of an inward grief at the loss of a dear friend, John Hutchens. John was an integral part of our community who passed away unexpectedly recently, just before he had planned to travel to Washington DC to participate in a rally, as part of the Poor People's Campaign. The MANNA staff invited everyone to write a remembrance or prayer on the cloth, which will cover the altar at a memorial service for him next week.
I was deeply moved by the creative, pastoral ritual of creating this cloth. We all need something to do in the face of the loss of a loved one. Doing it with others is restorative. And in addition to the cloth, the MANNA team created space for people to share their feelings, their memories of John, and to acknowledge how this loss connected to their own individual journeys, fears, and faith. All of this will be brought to the altar - in the cloth, in hands outstretched to receive the assurance of life beyond suffering and loss that comes in the sacrament, and in the community formed through the conversations hosted by our skilled MANNA team.
As we each hold our personal losses, and as we as a society grieve the division and injustices that make necessary a Poor People's Campaign and more, I give thanks for the life of John Hutchens and the life of the faith community made richer through his presence.

NEW AND ONGOING
Were you here for our premier program, Bingo on the Steps, last week? Our pilot program, a Ministry of the Steps, continues to bring us out to you! On Tuesdays and Wednesdays there will be a variety of events and activities, from music to "tabling" by non-profits, and all kinds of fun and interesting things in-between. We're still fine-tuning the program but keep an eye here as we unfold this new and exciting ministry.
This coming Wednesday, July 18, Dean Amy McCreath will lead an art project, "Art for Peace," beginning at 9 a.m., followed at 11:00 a.m. by members of the diocesan Hispanic Ministry on hand to share their ministry and how you can get involved.
Conscious Contact, Wednesdays 7-8 p.m.
This program, led by Deacon Cynthia Pape and Bill Comer and based on the 11th step of the Alcoholics Anonymous program (improving conscious contact with God as we understand God...through prayer and meditation), continues every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the church. It's open to everyone.

All the Ibeabuchi family and many friends will be on hand for Arinze's baptism, and they are also providing extra special treats for this Sunday's Coffee Hour, which for the summer is moved to Sproat Hall.

Faith Matters Reflects on The Sabbath
This Sunday after Coffee Hour our focus on The Sabbath in Faith Matters will continue with a discussion of "How I keep the Sabbath." Louise Mundinger will be our discussion leader. Beginning this Sunday, Faith Matters will take place in the church for the summer to accommodate the Chinese congregation worship in the Lawrence Room, and as always, everyone is invited to attend.
The Sunday Morning Council will meet this Sunday at 12:30 in the Library at The Paulist Center, 5 Park St. in Boston (a five-minute walk from the Cathedral).

the Rev. Dr. John Boopalan, who serves as Minister for Community Life and Theologian in Residence at First Baptist Church, Newton MA. John's teaching and writing explores liberation theology, and his work at First Baptist includes creating public forums on critical issues in living a theologically-grounded life. He is the author of the recently-published book,
Memory, Grief, and Agency: A Political Theological Account of Wrongs and Rites

The Crossing is our grassroots, justice-focused, do-it-yourself church community of hipsters, heretics, homeless, and other unlikely pilgrims.
The Crossing recently bade farewell to their Priest, the Rev. Marsha Hoecker,
who retired on May 24th. We wish Marsha a fond farewell and thank-you for her guidance and enthusiasm for The Crossing's unique worship and fellowship.
In a recent letter to The Crossing community, Minister of Liturgical Arts Ashley Anderson has also announced her resignation effective mid/late July. In her letter Ashley wrote: "After a long period of prayerful discernment, I have decided to step down from my ministry at The Crossing. I give this news with sadness and also with hope for what The Crossing may become and grow into. I have deep gratitude for the radical welcome and blessed beauty of The Crossing. You all have taught me so much."
Ashley's last worship service with The Crossing will be July 26. Come and wish her well in her next chapter.
