A.S., a 13-year old in Silwan

"At 4 am, we heard a loud knock at the door. We didn't think they were coming to arrest anyone, we thought they were coming to demolish our house, as we have a pending demolition order. My father called out, asking who it was. The soldiers identified themselves and said they were coming to arrest 'Hamada'. Without opening the door, my father replied, that they had the wrong house; there was no Hamada here..."

Talking with Kids About Racism

Join us on July 17, 24, and 31 at ZenBarn Studio in Waterbury for Talking with Kids About Racism . This three-part program addresses the difficulty of discussing race and racism with children. Explore the impact of racism on our children and learn how to talk to them about these issues in a meaningful and age-appropriate way.

Here's what past participants had to say:

LEARN
" [I learned] how to be comfortable with the uncomfortable;" and how "to become aware of my own prejudices, especially those that exist at the subconscious level."

"I learned that you can't solve everything in one day. But taking small steps and holding yourself accountable can take you far when undoing racism on a personal level. The discussion is never over and there's always more that you can learn in regard to race and racism."

PARTICIPATE
"I thought the training was well facilitated with varying levels of interaction that allowed for engagement at participants' personal comfort levels."

"Splitting into triads for the [roleplay] scenarios with time to debrief and work on strategies before presenting to the larger group worked best and was super helpful. I especially appreciated when the facilitators shared personal stories and examples of using strategies / making mistakes / confronting racism."

ACT
"I plan to have those difficult conversations when they arise and to not back away."

"I plan to work on not avoiding conversations about race. I want to turn interactions into an opportunity to learn whenever I can."

From the Blog: An endless sea of blue like the Managua sky

(translated by Trish O'Kane)

I've never been a marcher. I don't like to feel used by anyone. But this time, I marched and wore black as requested. I marched because I am grieving for those 30 murdered young people. I never thought that our former heroes who fought to overthrow the Somoza dictatorship, and today who are in power, would kill so many young people in cold blood just for protesting, just because they were fed up with the abuse they live with every day.
Planting Hope is Vermont- and Nicaraguan-based organization that  raises money to support Nicaraguan communities and brings Vermonters (usually high school students) to Nicaragua.
