Former District Teacher Wins Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

Alicia Foy was recently named a recipient of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). Foy, who previously taught at Poinciana Elementary School, received the PAEMST award which is the nation's highest honor for teachers of mathematics and science. The award is given  each year to just one mathematics and one science teacher in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. Territories and Department of Defense Education Activity schools. 

Foy taught in the School District of Palm Beach County for 20 years. She is certified in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and STEM coaching through the University of Florida. She was instrumental in acquiring STEM certification for Poinciana Elementary, and she has presented professional development at the local, state, and national levels. Read more...
Local Speech and Debate Competitors Aim for National Titles
Several Palm Beach County students competed in the recent Speech and Debate National Championships in Fort Lauderdale.  

"I love speech and debate because it gives me a chance to spread my voice and use my talent," shared Samantha White, a student at Bak Middle School of the Arts. 

In the end, the speech and debate team from Bak celebrated after the national championship.  The students won the award for "Overall School of Excellence."  Watch the video...
School Police Receives Accreditation for the Sixth Time Since 2003
The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) has approved full reaccreditation for the School District of Palm Beach County School Police Department. This is the sixth time that School Police has received accreditation since 2003.

Accreditation, a highly-prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence, certifies that the Department's policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services are in compliance with CFA standards. Board Member Whitfield Honored for Support of LGBTQ Community

School Board member Erica Whitfield was honored last month as the 2018 recipient of the Compass Leadership Award.  Compass, an organization that promotes awareness for the LGBT community, gives the award to recognize the achievements of elected and appointed officials who display the highest level of commitment and long-established record of leadership in social justice embodied by Compass' mission.

"Celebrating the diversity of the students in our schools and people of our community is something that is close to my heart," said Whitfield. "It is important to me that as a District we show compassion and provide support for our LGBTQ students and staff."  Read more...
